While living in Florence, the number one thing we would recommend to visitors is a trip to the church of San Miniato al Monte. There are many reasons to visit this lovely church, but one of the best reasons is because of the unparalleled view of the city. From the city center, walk south across the the Arno river over the Ponte alle Grazie, through the San Niccolo neighborhood, and through the oldest surviving city gate. Right outside the gate, walk straight uphill and the, look to the left for a pedistrian only stairway as the street veers to the right. This stairway, made up of over 100 stone steps is a lane called the "Way of the Cross" and has wooden crosses outlining the path with sto...Read More

When most people think of Florence, the church of Santa Maria del Fiore comes to mind. Collectively called "Il Duomo" this church houses two of my favorite overlooks, and although the top of the actual dome is higher, I prefer the view from the belltower (Campanile di Giotto) as it offers a view of the city and the dome itself. Built in 1334 by Giotto, this structure also allows a close up look at the exterior of the church to which it's attachedOne of the highlights of climbing the belltower is that the line is almost always quite small, if there even is a line. After paying the small entrance fee, you can take your time on the stairways and the many terrace levels on the way up to rest. ...Read More

After the views from San Miniato and Giotto's Belltower, the next best view over Florence, Italy is that from the beautiful neighboring hillside town of Fiesole.Located just 5 miles north of the city center of Florence, and an easy trip up on Bus #7 straight to Fiesole's main square, Fiesole offers great respite from the bustling city below, and hosts many wonderful panoramic views along lovely walks on its country roads.Because Fiesole sits on a hill overlooking the entire area of Florence, almost every path leads to another lookout, but one can enjoy lovely landmarks along the way by following one of the popular "walks". Starting in the main square look for the marked Panoram...Read More

Probably the most famed structure of the Reinassance city of Florence, Italy is the massive red-roofed dome of the Santa Maria del Fiore church - otherwise known as "Il Duomo". Designed by the famed artist Brunelleschi , and completed in 1436, this dome is still an architectural wonder and is still the largest masonry dome in the world. At 463 steps up, this climb is not one for the faint-hearted...or claustrophobic for that matter, as much of the climb is in very narrow staircases that slant in between the interior dome and the outside roof. One of the most unique things about this view, are the views one can see on the way up. Not only are there peeks outside through small openings, but a...Read More

Probably the most popular lookout in Florence is the famed Piazzale Michelangelo. Although not ranked in the top 4 positions for "Best Views in Florence" in my opinion...it still is quite spectacular.Sitting just above the neighborhood of San Niccolo and next to the lovely Iris Garden, this piazza is pretty much just a glorified parking lot. Although the view is marvelous, I think it's a little lower on my list, only because of the lack of atmosphere in the area surrounding you while taking in that marvelous view. Walk through the big lot of parked cars and tour buses, past the large (copy) statue of David, and between the many stalls of street vendors selling "Ciao Bella" t-shirts and lea...Read More
