Quote: Pismo Beach is an underrated stopping point on the California Coast along Highway 1. The main attraction -- the beach -- is miles long with soft sand and frothy waves.

Overview

Building sandcastles, playing in the sand at the water's edge, watching the sunset, hot-tubbing on my hotel's balcony, and checking out the stars, were relaxing and recharging activities.Quick Tips: Pismo Beach has a wide range of accommodations. Be very careful that you don't end up in a dumpy, old motel. There are no high-end big chains in Pismo. However, there are a few nice places right on the water. We stayed at Sea Venture which was a low-key but high quality place. All of the rooms have hot tubs on their balconies. We also had a fireplace and a direct ocean view.Best Way To Get Around: The only convenient way to get to Pismo is by car on Highway 1 or 101. Once you find a hotel...Read More

Sea Venture seems to be one of the best (if not the best) hotels in Pismo Beach. Although the room rate was expensive, we were able to get an upgrade to the best room (full ocean view with hot tub on balcony, plus fireplace). A nicely sized continental breakfast is included and is delivered to your room in the morning. The hotel is right on the beach, which is crucial if you want to avoid getting sidetracked. The best scenery is on the beach and not in the middle of town. The linens were luxurious. There were nice bathrobes. The hot tub was very relaxing. It provided a great way to watch the stars at night and stay warm at the same time. We were there during high season, but if you go in the of...Read More

We just stumbled upon this restaurant which turned out to be a very busy place. After we arrived and were seated promptly, they started taking names for the waiting list and the entire place packed up. The portions were huge. We each ordered entrees which came with side dishes of pasta and salad. I would recommend ordering light, or splitting an entree, because we weren't able to get close to finishing our meals. The special was a local fish which was cooked nicely and served with plenty of sides. The appetizer was a tasty small pizza served right out of the brick oven. Although I can't remember the name (I need to wait for my credit card statement), it should be easy to find. It's on one of Pismo's m...Read More

The beach is incredibly long (many miles). It seems to be endless. The sand is very soft and great for digging and building sand castles. There were about ten surfers in wetsuits. There were two or three kitesurfers. People fish off of the long pier. The sunset was gorgeous. The place is very mellow and low-key. It wasn't overly crowded.

Pismo Beach is a throwback to the past. In general, it has a nice, mellow feeling. The beach is clearly the main attraction. It is a nice place to stop for a full day at the beach or for one night. I would be careful in choice of accommodations because there seem to be many small motels that are also stuck in the past. There are several upscale hotels (non-chain) and a Best Western that overlooks the water.
