Groningen seems a lot like a small Amsterdam, except students are substituted for tourists. When not trying to get our daughter settled into her university housing, we spent a lot of time mostly strolling around. There are a number of parks not too far from the city center. It was an easy walk to one park which had a music festival going on. Like Amsterdam, Groningen has canals and a lot of time can be enjoyably passed crossing over canals and wandering along narrow streets with medieval buildings lining the sides. Many of the oldest buildings, scattered around the town, are part of the university which was founded in 1614.One old building we stopped at had been turned into a p...Read More

Restaurant | "Dutch Fast Food"

Quote:
We wanted to sample some typical Dutch cuisine, which to us, meant pancakes. At our hotel, we saw an advertisement for the Pannekoekenschip, a ship or more accurately, a barge on a canal which served pancakes. It was only open for dinner since the Dutch do not eat pancakes for breakfast. The nautical theme is very heavy at this restaurant. We sat towards the back at wooden tables where a wooden sailor smiled at us. Behind us, we could look out onto the canal through portholes. Seeing cars parked along the canal tended to ruin the seafaring illusion. The alcoholic beverage selection was somewhat limited. Only one beer was offered. The menu included a few items other than pancakes,...Read More

Restaurant | "Elegant but Weedy"

Hotel Schimmelpenninck Huys is situated in an elegant mansion in the shopping and nightlife centre of the city. It offers three restaurants. We decided to try Classique, the French restaurant. The restaurant room looks like it used to be the front sitting room for the former home of an important and wealthy city leader. There is a fireplace and mantle at one end where the bar is now located. The tables are widely spaced and elegantly set. Chandeliers sparkle overhead. It feels rather formal and perhaps, a bit stuffy. The menu is a la carte. We were served some amuse bouches as we perused the menu. The food was good fairly classic French. While we enjoyed our meal, it was not espe...Read More

Restaurant | "Worth a Repeat Visit"

This restaurant was recommended because it has a good wine list so we made reservations when we were walking around exploring the city. The dinner that night was part of restaurant week so the menu items were limited but this did not turn out to be a problem. The restaurant is probably best described as contemporary European. The restaurant space is small but with two stories, large windows and a mainly white interior contemporary design, it feels more spacious. There are good photos on the restaurant website: www.seizoen.eu, but the text is only in Dutch. The quality fresh ingredients were prepared and served with some flare. Services was very attentive and the staff were super ...Read More

Hotel | "Great for a Quiet Sleep"

We only stayed one night at this hotel which we picked because it is barely a hop and a skip away from the train station. We were returning to Groningen after a short break in Brussels, thus, we were somewhat familiar with the city and the fact that this hotel is not right in the center of things was not a problem. As it turned out, it was a blessing. We had stayed at Eden City Hotel Groningen, which was very central, and thus, very noisy. The Asgard Hotel was just the opposite. It is on a very quiet street yet only a few blocks away from the busiest roads. We were grateful to get a good night’s sleep.Asgard is a very small boutique hotel with a trendy, i.e., minimalist, interior decorated...Read More

The Eden City Hotel Groningen has a number of pluses and minuses. It lies in the heart of Groningen with many amenities and next to many good restaurants. The location is convenient both close to the train station and the car-free city centre for shopping or nightlife. The hotel has a free sauna, a fitness room, and a Turkish bath. Every floor has a coffee maker that guests can use for free. The Internet Corner is also free of charge as is the wireless internet in the lobby. The rooftop terrace offers a nice view of the city. It has bikes for rent at €5 per day, very handy in the bike-friendly city. The hotel offers a breakfast buffet, but rather expensive at €15. Self serve pizz...Read More
