UPDATE 2013 - this restaurant is no longer trading. We're all on the hunt for good value fine dining these days and one excellent example of this is Aquavitus in Chester which offers both a 3 course lunch deal at £8.95 per person and an after dinner menu at £9.95 on Monday to Friday from 6:00 pm to 10:30 pm.~ The Occasion~ My colleague Angela is pregnant and fit to pop so on the evening before her last day at work before starting her maternity leave we all wanted to go out and celebrate, or perhaps to just take her mind off the horrors to come. We had a mixed crowd to deal with, living in different directions and having different levels of disposable income, so we n...Read More

Spice Garden

Restaurant | "No Garden, Plenty of Spice"

Another week brought another visit from my hungry curry-loving colleague Joep. I had no plans for the evening and asked if he wanted to have dinner. His eyes lit up; "Can we have curry?" he asked excitedly. And so at around 6.30pm we left the office to go in search of a new curry restaurant that we'd not tried before. I'd spotted the Spice Garden on my way to work that morning and decided that this time it would get our custom. The world (well the UK anyway – and India, Bangladesh, Pakistan etc…..you get what I mean) is full of curry restaurants and in the middle of a recession we should spread our pennies around and try to support a new one each time until we run out or get food poisoning....Read More

Chinese Delight

Restaurant | "A Delightful Chinese at the Chinese Delight"

One of the nice things about writing reviews is that every now and then you get to know someone on a site and then realise that they actually live not far from where you live or work and friendships can move from the internet to the real world. Such was the case recently when I arranged to meet for dinner with a member of a UK-based review site. After debating the various options we worked out that for both of us Frodsham could be a handy location and I suggested 'that Chinese place on the way into Frodsham from the Preston Brook end of the town'. I think most people in the area would know it from that description but a bit of googling quickly identified the restaurant as the Chinese Delight....Read More

Restaurant | "Nothing to Justify a Second Visit"

Earlier this week Iwas having a pretty lousy day at work. Meeting after meeting was getting delayed and most of them were getting hijacked by other people's agendas. I was feeling mighty peeved and all I really wanted to do was go home and eat junk food. But unfortunately I'd already promised to take my Belgian colleague Joep out for dinner and I didn't want to let him down. As our meetings droned on and on and the clock ticked past 6 and then 7 pm, the only thought sustaining me was a mental picture of a mountain of Chinese food. Then to cap an already poor day I opened my mouth and with true Duke of Edinburgh style, I proceeded to insert my foot. Why on earth did I ask my colleague Kersti...Read More

It's a very long time since I was last at the Bells of Peover. I think it must have been at least 15 or 16 years ago - it's a wonder I can even remember the place at all. The reason why I can remember is because when I went, a visit to the Bells of Peover constituted 'A Big Day Out'. I was working in my first job, not on a massive salary and not in the habit of expensive meals out. I believe the boyfriend and I even took a day off work just to drive out to the countryside to have lunch because he'd heard great things about the place. Back then the Bells of Peover was a yuppie paradise: a multi-award winning gastro pub at a time when nobody had even started to use the term 'gastro pub'. We ...Read More
