Quote: This northern Turkish town is a great base for exploring the Gallipoli Peninsular and the historic site of Troy as well as being an interesting town in its own right. Here are my tips for a great stay and for what to see.

The Turkish town of Canakkale (pronounced Shana -kalay), situated some 350 Kilometres from Istanbul is a bustling place that caters essentially to the needs of those tourists visiting the Gallipoli Battlefields just across the Dardanelles, the straits that join the Sea of Marmara with the Aegean Sea. It also gets a number of visitors who are visiting nearby Troy, though many visitors to that site come only for the day from resorts on the coast. Thanks to the high number of young Aussies and Kiwis who come to see the graves of their ancestors, Canakkale is an extremely lively resort, quite different to other towns in northern Turkey.Turkey has an extensive and efficient network of comfortab...Read More

The Gallipoli peninsula is situated in the region of Thrace in North Eastern Turkey. The peninsula forms the northern side of the straits known as the Dardanelles that lie at the eastern end of the Sea of Marmara. Throughout the centuries many naval fleets have tried to take the Dardanelles and nearly all have failed to do so. The late nineteenth century saw a decline in the fortunes of the Ottoman Empire and the English and French competed against Russia to take control of the Dardanelles because they provided a sea passage between the Aegean and the Black Seas. World War One provided an opportunity for the British to try again; Churchill devised a plan to take the Straits whi...Read More

For a long time Troy was thought to be the stuff of legend but some historians were convinced that Troy had existed; many excavations were carried out in Turkey looking for proof. The work of one, a German archaeologist, Henirich Schliemann, forms the basis of what visitors to Troy see now.Troy is situated on the Aegean coast of Turkey, some 340km from the city of Izmir and roughly the same distance from Istanbul. Many visitors base themselves in Canakkale (from where they also visit the Gallipoli Peninsular) and many companies offer trips from Canakkale, about 30km from Troy.In 1998 Troy was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site; it was the culmination of years of excavation...Read More

Hotel | "Yellow Rose Pension - a Good Value Choice"

Quote:
Although the Yellow Rose calls itself a "Pension" it is really a hostel - but a hostel of a good standard and one that is not institutionalized. There are few of the organized activities you find in many hostels and guests do not really congregate in any communal areas. Most people tend to do their own thing as there is no bar. Most of the time the hostel was deathly quiet but in the early hours there was sometimes noise from other guests coming in.It would have been good to see a few notices displayed reminding people of the need to be quiet on the stairs and in hallways. The Yellow Rose Pension offers a variety of room types - singles, doubles (with en suite facilities), ...Read More
