My husband and I love to go walking but we're pretty timid walkers. I can't navigate a map to save my life and he'd much rather just relax and let someone else handle the strain of finding the route. I always want to pack a bag with every possible emergency aid, sunblock, first aid kit, food, water and a sleeping bag, and he wants to leave all that behind. We have a bad habit of getting lost and it's much nicer to just walk and enjoy the views and not have to think about where you are going and whether you'll ever be able to get back again. We've often taken walking holidays abroad but it's really not necessary because the UK has such beautiful countryside. One of the best ways to enjoy this is by goi...Read More

Attraction | "Elephants on Ice - Sadly No, Only Me!"

I've worked or lived in and around the North West of England for many years and have seen and done most of the local attractions but one place I've never made it to is Chester Zoo. I'm not a big fan of zoos and I probably wouldn't have set foot in this one - or not quite 'in', it's more correct to say 'by' - if it weren't for the annual Christmas event at the company where I now work. For the past few years, the department Christmas event has been a visit to the Chester Frost Fair to go skating and so, not wishing to be unsociable, I signed up to go along. I have to say it wasn't without a sense of trepidation since it's almost 20 years since I last strapped on a pair of skates and I had a husband at ...Read More

Cheshire Oaks Outlet Shopping Centre

Quote:
Cheshire Oaks Outlet Centre is located at Ellesmere Port, just off the M56 at Junction 10 of the M53 and is well signposted from both motorways. Ellesmere Port, for those who don't know it, is a rather sad and unloved place on the Mersey estuary which, if you are seeing the glass half-full has a fairly interesting Boat Museum or if you are a glass half-empty soul, it's got a massive and sometimes very smelly oil refinery on its doorstep. Fortunately the refinery isn't as unpleasant as it used to be when I first started visiting about 15 years ago. At that time, the areas around Ellesmere Port was the only place that I could be sure that the strange smells in my elderly Austin Allegro were coming from ...Read More

I lived in Manchester for 11 years but I'd never visited Tatton Park. Considering that it's one of the area's most famous and well-loved attractions this was a serious omission on my part. I think I possibly had it confused with Lyme Park and for some reason I'd always assumed that it must cost an arm and a leg to visit and I'd never entirely worked out where it was. It took a visit to a totally different country to spur us into action to go and visit. In June I dragged my husband over to Bremen, Germany for the weekend. I go frequently for work but he'd never seen the city. Whilst sitting in Bremen's excellent Ubersee Museum, staring at a reconstructed Japanese Pagoda, my husband announced...Read More

The Deep Aquarium

Attraction | "Even Fish Are Miserable Living in Hull"

Quote:
I'd love to claim my first impressions of The Deep were "Wow! What an amazing looking building?" but they weren't. My thoughts were "Gosh, is the weather ALWAYS as awful as this?" The wind was blowing a gale and the spray off the Humber was spiking horizontally across the car park. The building is an imposing wedge of glass and metal and faced with an iconic new building, I would normally have taken a big deep breath and got a good eyeful of this before walking in. However, with wind I could hardly stand up in I put my head down and ran. There's a mid-sized car park beside The Deep. I would imagine at busy times it wouldn't be anything like big enough. I arrived at a few minut...Read More
