For several years I used to go to the Bilderburg T'Speulderbos at least three times a year. I worked for a company that used the hotel for training courses and was a trainer on one of their courses and I always looked forward to visits to this really unusual area of Holland. Generally speaking most visitors to the Netherlands don't seem to venture much further than Amsterdam or the bulb fields which is a shame because there's a lot worth seeing if you venture a bit further away. The hotel is located in a really calm forested area on the edge of the Hoge Veluwe National Park, a place I've been to several times without ever learning how to pronounce it. It's not a conventionally pretty park b...Read More

Hotel | "It's Been a While but We Loved It"

My husband and I are pretty calm and unflappable people who don't get too stressed by things. Despite our family and friends knowing this, I think they were all still pretty amazed when the weekend before our wedding we decided to go to Amsterdam for a few days. They all supposed we'd be at home panicking over last minute arrangements instead of drinking beer and cappuccinos and stuffing ourselves with pancakes and chips with mayonnaise. We married in mid March which is well outside the peak season in Amsterdam and were able to get a really cheap deal at the Victoria. Why the Victoria?Well it's easy - that's the main thing. I've got lost by following my nose looking for hotels i...Read More

~ Arrival and Check In ~We arrived by taxi from the airport – it took about 10 minutes and I can't say what it cost as I managed to stitch up the colleague I was with who was going on to the Mercure and so fell foul of the 'last one out picks up the bill' rule. First impressions were mixed because the Novotel is currently undergoing a major renovation programme and the reception is currently in what appears to be a marquee. I've had some horrendous experiences of staying in hotels that were undergoing renovation so I was a bit nervous when I realised what was going on at this one. However, the charm and friendliness of the place soon put me at ease. The receptionist was astonish...Read More

Lapershoek Hotel

Hotel | "My Old Home from Home in Hilversum"

Quote:
For almost six years I worked for a company with its European head office in Hilversum and I stayed many times at the Lapershoek, sometimes as often as two or three times a month. I've known this hotel in bad times and good - the bad times mostly predating the acquisition of the hotel by the Amrath chain and the good post-dating the change. Amrath did a great job though they changed almost nothing about the fabric of the hotel but certainly made major changes to the spirit and attitude of the staff who became a lot more positive, friendly and helpful under the Amrath team. When Amrath took over they invited a bunch of us regular visitors to have drinks with the management in the hotel's tin...Read More

Amrath Grand Hotel & Theater Gooiland

Hotel | "My Bear's Still in Therapy After the Gooiland"

Quote:
In the days when I visited Hilversum frequently I mostly stayed at the Lapershoek but sometimes, if that hotel was full, I would be unfortunate enough to get sent to the Gooiland, now known as the Amrath Grand Hotel and Theatre. Since this was a higher star-rated hotel you might wonder why it was such a chore to be sent there. Quite simply - and to save the efforts of anyone who doesn't want to read futher - I really dislike the Gooiland. It may be grander, it may have a Japanese Tepanyaki restaurant downstairs, an ice-cream parlour and even a theatre but I just don't like the place. Some members of the site may know that I have a small bear - Pooh - who travels with me wherever I go.
