Switzerland is my idea of tourist paradise. True, I can think of dozens—no, hundreds—of other countries, states, towns, villages and regions which are equally (if not more) scenic, historic and otherwise attractive, but very few are able to rival Switzerland in making travel easy, comfortable and enjoyable for the visitor. Switzerland succeeds on all counts, and how! The countryside is gorgeous, with swathes of woodland alongside meadows studded with wildflowers and picturesque cows (or, occasionally, sheep), each with a perfect bell hanging round its neck. Switzerland also happens to be the only place where I’ve found sheep and cows grazing inside cities—my favourite Metro station in Lausanne was one...Read More

Part of our Swiss itinerary was Jungfraujoch: "Definitely worth visiting,"according to my sister. Not because we haven’t seen mountains this high; the Jungfrau is, after all, small fry when compared with most of the Himalayan peaks back home. But back home, it’s impossible to go that high up a mountain on a day trip from a major city.Which brings me to our day trip from Lausanne to Jungfrau. This, as we realised during the course of a very long day that we spent mostly travelling, isn’t a good idea. It’s comfortable enough, and the views are out of this world, but it’s too much to pack into one day.We began at about 8 AM by taking the Metro to Lausanne Ouchy, from where we chan...Read More

For they appeal from tyranny to God.George Gordon, Lord Byron; Sonnet on ChillonFrançois Bonivard (1496-1570) was the prior of St Victor, near Geneva, when he opposed the efforts of Charles III, Duke of Savoy, to control Geneva. After imprisoning Bonivard for 3 years at Grolée, the Duke released the monk—only to later re-imprison him, this time at the château of Chillon. Bonivard was incarcerated till 1536, when the Bernese captured the château. Less than...Read More

Tarun hated the climb up to Château de Gruyères. Not because it’s steep (it isn’t; just slightly), but because I kept stopping every few metres to drool over some wildflower I wanted to photograph, or to generally gush over the view. With constant pushing and prodding, he eventually managed to get me up the lane that runs across the hill from near the railway station, up to the gravel path that leads to the château. We went through the stone gateway, admiring the surrounding ramparts, and found ourselves in a cobbled square crowded with restaurants and souvenir shops. Horrified to find ourselves in a tourist trap of the worst sort, we staggered around a bit before we found a path off on our left, besi...Read More

Although Gruyères has a railway station of its own, getting to the town can be a bit tedious because you have to change trains, travel partway by bus, and generally spend a while looking out on miles and miles of Swiss countryside. Not a problem, really, but still. Since we were staying in Lausanne, we first had to catch a train to Fribourg, and then take a bus from Fribourg to Bulle. From Bulle, a cute two-carriage train called La Gruyère does the trip to Gruyères. We got off the La Gruyère, stepped out of the train station, and there, across the road, was the 40-year old fromagérie known as La Maison du Gruyère. It doesn’t look much on...Read More

When I was a child, I hated cheese. Really. Then, somewhere along the way, I changed tack and began loving it with a vengeance—which, of course, is why we included Gruyères in our itinerary. And being in Gruyères, we had to have lunch at a place that served good cheesy stuff. Not a problem, really, since restaurateurs here have cottoned on to the fact that cheese sells. The large cobbled square that forms the `vestibule’ (well, sort of) to Château Gruyères is chockfull of restaurants, souvenir sellers and the like. Among these, we found the Café-Restaurant des Remparts. This is the first restaurant on the right as you enter through the towering gateway of the castle. The f...Read More
