Finding a good restaurant in Zagreb is not difficult; the only problem is choosing just one. Of course, if you are staying for several days your task is made easier but we recently stayed in the Croatian capital for just one night so we wanted to choose well. After a little deliberation over a couple of glasses of beer from a local microbrewery, we decided on Stari Fijaker, a traditional Croatian restaurant housed in what is reputedly one of Zagreb’s oldest ‘beer halls’ – or so the Zagreb In Your Pocket brochure claimed. In fact this was much more of an inn and less beer hall; all of the customers were dining and if this really was a beer hall, I’d have expected more people to be only drin...Read More

Hotel | "Step Back into the Seventies at Hotel Laguna"

Zagreb’s Hotel Laguna is one of those wonderful relics from the ‘socialist’ era that is now increasing rare. Perhaps because of the hotel’s not inconsiderable size and its location a ten minute tram ride from the city centre, the hotel has remained largely un-renovated although I would be quick to point out that this only means that the public areas are dated (in the most fabulous way) and even the un-renovated bedrooms are of a good standard for the price you can get by shopping round. We booked through Expedia about a week before our stay; we’d been let down by the accommodation we’d already booked and needed to organise an alternative in a hurry. When booking it was made clear that we w...Read More

Restaurant | "Tasty but a Tad Over-Priced "

Curiously this rather attractive restaurant on one of Zagreb’s prettiest streets does not appear in any of the English language listings I’ve found online. Having risen early to make the train journey down to Zagreb from Maribor (Slovenia) our group of four fancied an early lunch stop and we spotted this place on Tkalciceva. Many of the buildings on this part of the street are quite old and quaint but it was the view through a little gateway into an outside seating area that persuaded us to try Restoran Mikina Klet. There are only a handful of tables outside which makes the patio rather cosy. There are lots of baskets of flowers and a trailing vine giving the impression that you are not i...Read More

Trg Bana Jelacica - the Heart of Zagreb

Story/Tip

Statue of Josip Jelacic - Trg Bana Jelacica Photo, Zagreb, Croatia
Quote:
Zagreb’s main square "Trg Bana Jelacica" is the vibrant heart of the Croatian capital and it’s a fine place in the Austro-Hungarian tradition, not dissimilar to squares you might find in cities like Vienna. It’s pretty hard to miss the square because it serves a number of functions; it’s a major hub for tram services, it is an ideal and convenient place to meet people, it contains a couple of important monuments in it’s own right and it’s close to a number of important and popular attractions, and it effectively forms the buffer between old town and nineteenth century Zagreb. Throw in that it is where you’ll find the main tourist information office and you can see why it’s almost impossible to miss....Read More

K and K is one of the best known cafes in Zagreb and one that is always recommended to tourists. The two Ks of its name stand for Kniza & Kava – which translates as Books and Coffee. Now, I had imagined – before I first visited this cafe – that the walls would be lined with book shelves but they are actually covered with framed photographs and prints of scenes of Zagreb throughout the centuries. It’s a really memorable and cosy interior and – even if the cafe element is not that special – it is certainly worth dropping by to see the interior. The books element of the name comes many from the fact that the whole palce is dedicated to Zagreb writer Zvonimir Milčec.Be warned though, this ...Read More

Attraction | "A Rainbow of Colour at Dolac"

Dolac is Zagreb’s very colourful central fresh produce market. It is situated in the area just behind Trg Bana Jelacic and you can access it though a small lane where you see the flower market start. Beyond the flower market you can either climb the stone steps to the market proper or go into the main indoor section where you’ll find meats and meat products, dairy stuffs and some dry goods. This market hall is actually underneath the main part of the outdoor market where you’ll find fruit and vegetables. When you go into the market hall, go off to the left for the meats section; here you see lots of fresh meats hanging and lots of things like offal and tripe displayed in the chillers. Then...Read More
