You might think that once you arrive in Fiji - you'll find some reasonable way to get out to the islands (of which there are many) other than the one or two pricey options you've found online. The unfortunate truth is that is not the case. It might be possible, if you know someone who's local and has a boat that you might be able to get out to the islands in some other way - or if you have enough disposable cash for the trip that finding some other charter might be a possibility. But for the bulk of travellers you are stuck with the pricey and less than pleasant options of the Malolo Cat and the Yasawa Flyer. For certain islands you also have the option of a small flight out....Read More

Sunrise Hike up Waya

When you arrive at Wayalailai the first thing you are likely to notice (aside from the stunning water and the beach front bures) is the Waya peak. Perched high in the centre of the island - it's a tall and commanding peak that contributes to the rustic and real feel of the island. One of the best thing about the Wayalailai resort is that there are so many great little experiences the local villagers offer those staying. Each day on the chalk board outside the dining area tells what activities are on for the day and what they cost. And though they are often small activities, the prices are excellent and because they are each run by one of the villagers - are a very unique exp...Read More

Though I realize I've based most of this 'Fiji Islands' review on the fact that every island and every resort has something different to offer, and the quality of each resort depends very strongly on what you are looking for - I feel I can very safely say that Wayalailai is the best resort option in Fiji. Certainly of all the ones that I visited. This resort - even if it is not where you choose to spend the bulk of your holiday or travelling in Fiji - is somewhere you can experience. For me, the best all over experience of Fiji you can get is at Wayalailai. Located on Waya Island at the start of the Yasawa Island chain - this is a great spot to begin, end, or fulfill yo...Read More

One thing that the guide books were right about - the Mamanuca islands are definitely for those who want the Fiji they've seen in magazines. For me, this part of Fiji seemed almost Caribbean, and the atmosphere - though still very laid back and relaxed, was all about the luxury of resorts, and island life for the visitor. We took the Mololo Cat in from Denarau Marina on the main island of Viti Levu - about an hour ride - and watching some of the other resorts that tourists piled off on, we could not have been more pleased that we had a little bit further to go. If you want to go to Fiji with your family - there are big, family friendly resorts just for you. Though if you are travelling ...Read More

This is a place that I deeply hate to give a bad review. I've been sitting here and thinking about it before I sat down to write, and really want to do the place justice. As it turned out - it was really not the kind of place that I was looking to stay, or the kind of Fijian holiday that I was looking for - but that would not be the case for everyone. So whereas my own experience here was less than perfect, I will try to be as even handed as possible with it, because it did have some great attributes as well, and might be just the thing for many travellers. So - once again - I will simply try to break it down into what I found the strengths and weaknesses of the place, and th...Read More
