I have to admit that museums turn us on. Art museums, especially, but others too. So one glance at the description of the Palais du Rumine in our guidebook, which explained that this hundred-year old building houses several museums, and we decided we couldn’t afford to miss this one.The Palais du Rumine is named for Gabriel de Rumine (1841-71), a Russian aristocrat who lived in Lausanne for a while and bequeathed his estate to the city, which used the funds to build this palace. The Florentine-style (I’d never have known it was that; that’s quoted from the Lausanne guide map) palace was officially inaugurated in November 1906, though work continued for a further three years. It’s an ornate building...Read More

Lunch at Lutry Photo - Restaurant du Léman, Lausanne, Switzerland
Quote:
Although Lutry isn’t really Lausanne (it’s a market town north of Lausanne, on the shores of Lac Leman), the Lausanne tourist information guide does list this as one of the `excursions from Lausanne’ so who am I to argue? The point is, Lutry—a ten-minute boat ride from Lausanne-Ouchy—is too small and quiet a town to merit a journal of its own, and this restaurant was so good, I couldn’t not write about it. So here goes. We’d spent a little while wandering around Lutry, which has pretty cobbled streets, wrought-iron signs, lots of tea rooms and a fine promenade along the lake front. After a bit of walking along, we were hungry enough for lunch, so chose one of the many cafés along the ...Read More

Attraction | "Overshadowed by the Cathedral, but Good"

Eglise de St Francoise Photo - Eglise de St Francois, Lausanne, Switzerland

Though it does get pretty much overshadowed by the Lausanne Cathedral, the Eglise de St François, which is lower down the hill, is still worth stopping by at. The good thing, of course, is that it isn’t as crowded as the cathedral—not that that was a problem for us, since when we visited, even the cathedral was quite empty. We’d walked uphill from the Place de la Gare, along the Rue du Petit-Chêne, when we arrived at the square known as Place St François, most of it occupied by the church. Tramlines and loads of greenery—trees and shrubs—got in the way of getting a decent long shot of the church, but once we’d crossed over into the immediate vicinity of the church, it got a little easier to s...Read More

We’d not planned on visiting the Musée d’Elysée—it was too far from the centre of town. Also, photography—as anybody on IgoUgo can see from my sad lot of photos—isn’t exactly big with me. I’m no good at it, and though I can appreciate a good photograph, I’m not willing to travel miles to see a bunch of photos I may not like. But, to put an end to this digression: we decided one day to go visit Lutry. Lutry is a picturesque village, all cobbled streets and quaint houses, along the shore of Lac Leman, north of Lausanne on the way to Montreux. Our relatives advised us to take a boat to Lutry, since it’s a short trip, and the boat ride is scenic. Paddl...Read More

Attraction | "A Good Museum in an Interesting Building"

A `view of Lausanne' Photo - Musee Historique, Lausanne, Switzerland
Quote:
According to our map, the Musée Historique was opposite the Lausanne Cathedral, but the only building we could see there was an uninspiring one with unpretty glass vestibules. That couldn’t be it, we thought. But yes, it did turn out to be the museum—such a sad façade, we thought, compared to the grandeur of the cathedral opposite—and it also turned out, to our pleasant surprise, to be an interesting and educational experience. The girl at the reception counter spoke fluent English and was a sweet, friendly person who glanced at our Swiss pass and gave us the happy news that it was valid in the museum. She wished us a good visit, and so we went off downstairs one level to begin our exploratio...Read More

Attraction | "Switzerland’s Finest Gothic Building"

Rose window at the Lausanne Cathedral Photo - Notre-Dame Cathedral of Lausanne, Lausanne, Switzerland
Quote:
It had been three years since we’d last visited Europe, and I’d been pining for a well-made medieval European cathedral. The Lausanne cathedral, billed by our guidebook as Switzerland’s finest Gothic edifice, was therefore unanimously elected by both of us for position of `first sight to be visited’ on this vacation. And it certainly delivered. The cousin with whom we were staying in Lausanne had given us detailed instructions, so after getting off the Metro at Lausanne Gare, our first task was to find the tourist office and get a map of Lausanne. You don’t really even need to search for the cathedral on the map: it’s the city’s pride and joy, so images of it—photos, illustrations, little icons—are ...Read More

Quote:
The Brasserie St Laurent, in Lausanne’s Old Town, has the distinction of being the only restaurant where we sat indoors during our trip to Switzerland and Alsace. The only reason we did so was that the tables outside were all occupied, and we were too tired and hungry to go looking for another place to eat. So we dragged ourselves in and sat down at the nearest table we could find, one next to a window overlooking the street. The waiter must have noticed our half-starved expressions, so he fetched the menus for us very quickly—and we ordered just as rapidly. The good bit about the Brasserie St Laurent is that it doesn’t confuse you by offering a vast range of dishes: there are four set meals, and yo...Read More
