The Towns of Nadi and Latouka

There are two main towns on Viti Levu you can visit on the side of the island nearest the airport, Nadi and Latouka. Nadi, which is five miles away from the airport - I found a little less interesting and a little more catered for tourists. This is where you find the 'sword sellers' (the Fijian term for the local, pushy market sellers) Though I have heard that this is also a problem in Latouka, and all areas tourists may go in Viti Levu, I never had the experience once. I did, however, avoid Nadi except to to to and from the hotel and pop into the market for some groceries to take on the road. The other travellers we encountered said they had a lot of problems there with the...Read More

The Local Bus...

Though it seems strange to suggest it given some of the amazing sights, beaches, resorts and sunsets I experienced in my time in the Fijian islands - I had to admit that one of my favourite little bits was taking the local bus on Viti Levu. I find that it is surprisingly hard these days to get a really, truly local experience when you visit somewhere. Flying clear around to the other side of the world doesn't cut it anymore, and it does seem to take some real effort to find something truly off the tourist trail. And often in these places, even when you do - they are so accustomed to you as a tourist - then you're not really any better off at getting the local feel. ...Read More

Check out the Main Island....

When I first started planning my trip to Fiji I was staying in New Zealand. And because the Pacific Islands are where New Zealanders go on holiday - everyone had an option and advice on what to do and where to go. And the one thing that everyone said to us was, "Don't stay on the main island - go straight out to the islands" This was something that I considered at length. But Fiji is a country made up of 333 islands - many of them having their own resorts, their own taste of island life. Local or resort - it had become a dizzying concept. Though I vowed never to do so again, I was again seduced by the amazing photography and the thrill of a new adventure and bought a Lone...Read More

If you are looking for something that is a bit more comfortable, and somewhere just to land for the night coming in and out of Nadi airport in Fiji, then you need look no further than the Raffles Gateway Hotel. There are plenty of very luxurious, very expensive resort hotels in Viti Levu from the Nadi itself all the way to harbour where you can catch the boats going out to the islands. And there are plenty of options if you want something that feels a bit more 'Fijian' - with a cheaper price tag and a more authentic feel. But if what you are looking for is just a little bit of ease and comfort before you set out on your exploration of the Fijian Islands, then the R...Read More

After our experience with a Nomads in Auckland - we were less than anxious to stay at another one to say the least. And to spend one of our precious days in Fiji at a grubby backpacker hostel was the last thing we had planned. However - after a few wrong turns, mixed up bookings and cash disappearances, we were in need of a simple, cheap place to stay one night in Nadi in between island hopping. And because we didn't know what was on offer in the area (and with no real way of finding out) and at least had some idea of what to expect of a Nomads, we reluctantly made our booking, and spent the entire boat ride back to Viti Levi dreading the night's stay. So what we found when w...Read More

Hotel | "Great Service and the Local Feel..."

Fiji as a whole is somewhat a law unto itself. From the moment you step off the plane you feel the world slide into what they casually call 'Fiji Time' - and if it's a place you've never been before, then you will have to learn your way around what you hear, what you are told - and what is actually the case. These are not always bad things, but everything does move at it's own pace - and is just a little bit different in Fiji - as you would come to expect from a different country. And nowhere do you best find this than in the Sabeto Mountains on Viti Levu. It is very, very likely that when asking around about your trip to Fiji, you have had the advice time and ag...Read More
