Overview

Quote:
Usually on a Friday night, no one in my family is interested in fixing dinner. We're tired of quick meals and certainly have no volunteers to do the meal preparation and clean up. So, Friday night has evolved into "eating out night". The entries in this journal include many of our favorite places to eat, some of the places where we that we give serious consideration before eating there again, and some of the restaurants that have a connection to Kansas City. Having lived in Kansas City for all these years, I have taken advantage of some of the fun and worthwhile activities this area has to offer. The entries in this journal are my family's recommnedation to Kansas City visitors.Quic...Read More

This is a beautiful 130 year old house that is located just a few blocks from the Johnson County courthouse. The house''s white exterior helps retain the original time period when the house was built by a prominent Kansas lawyer, I.O. Pickering. The house is listed on the National Historic Register. The house has an onion-shape domed veranda and Italiante cupola. The interior rooms are decorated in period antiques which provides a relaxing and inviting atmosphere. A night''s stay includes a complimentary dinner and breakfast which is served in the formal dining room. The house includes a library full of historical books, a parlor with a fireplace, and a baby grand piano i...Read More

A friend had recommended the soups at Gert's Grille, so we thought we'd check it out. My wife and I arrived on a Friday night around 6:30 and found parking spaces right up front. The parking lot was nearly empty - this was certainly the first indication that maybe this restaurant would not necessarily be the best. My first thought when opening the door was based on the noise level. It was so loud for such a small place. Televisions blared from all around the bar and a big screen TV filled an area of the restaurant up towards the front. Additionally, canned music blasted in the background, competing with the sports programs on the TV. My second indication that the restaurant was not th...Read More

Planet Sub is an extension of the Yello Sub restaurant from Lawrence Kansas. This was the first sub shop in Lawrence and it's popularity includes the Planet Sub locations in Kansas City. The over 40 different kinds of sub sandwiches are made with homemade whole wheat sub bread which is baked in the restaurant. So of course the restaurant smells like freshly baked bread! The sandwiches are wrapped in foil and heated all the way through. These sandwiches are made to be eaten hot. The cheese melts and the sauces are superb. (No low fat stuff here. These sandwiches are full of melted cheese and sauce.) The bread is toasted so it holds all the fixings inside without getting soggy. There are...Read More

Quote:
Zio's is a popular place in our community. Plan to eat early or late unless you want to wait for a table. The restaurant does have a waiting area next to the bar and they have an eating counter for quicker dining up over by the kitchen. The smoking section of the restaurant is sufficiently segmented from the non-smoking portion that diners are not necessarily bothered. There are plenty of tables in the non-smoking section so we've never settled for "first available". The serving sizes are plentiful. If my wife and I could agree on one entre to order, we could share a dinner. However, we like to try different meals at this restaurant and have enjoyed everything we've ordered. ...Read More

Jumpin Catfish

Restaurant

Quote:
Jumpin Catfish serves family style Southern cooking with specialities in catfish, chicken, seafood, quail, trout and duck. The regular menu and frequent specials include all you can eat items or regular serving. If you order the "all you can eat", the restaurant does not want you to share with others (except children under the age of 5!) and you cannot have a doggie bag. Not that we asked... It's just information that they share. The regular serving options vary by the number of fillets or pieces, and by the additional side order of either mashed potatoes or baked potato. The restaurant does not encourage substitution of food items, so make your best selection. The catfish on the regul...Read More

Quote:
KC Masterpiece Barbecue and Grill offers a good selection of barbecue choices that are suitable for either lunch or dinner. I recommend starting off with the smoked buffalo wings as an appetizer. The sauce is spicy and gets your taste buds ready for barbecue. The specialties begin with ribs. One slab of ribs is more than enough for my wife and me, or I will order it for myself with plans for leftovers the next day. I also like their burnt ends, either the beef or the pork. If you cannot make up your mind, they offer a meal for four people that includes a sampling of chicken and ribs with two of the side dishes. There is also a rib pack for four people or a barbecue pit classic of burnt end...Read More

Super Buffet

Restaurant

Quote:
Update since posting the original journal: Never mind about checking into this restaurant. I drove by the other day and there is a big "for lease" sign just outside the front door. The parking lot was empty and the place abandoned. I don't know what might have caused it to close so quickly, espeically when the location is good and the service quick for the lunch crowd. Oh well, they come and they go. Super Buffet is exactly that - a large buffet of just about every type of food. This is the first place where I've seen offerings of macaroni & cheese just across from plates full of egg rolls. There are 6 buffet tables with over 100 items. There are American foods, along with Chin...Read More

Restaurant | "MCormick & Schmick's Seafood "

Quote:
The seafood is fabulous, even here in the middle of the midwest, away from the ocean. The menu changes twice a day based on the shipment of fresh seafood. The restaurant is located in the Country Club Plaza and provides a wonderful romantic setting. Reservations should be made at least two weeks in advance as it can be challenging getting into the restaurant, especially on a Saturday night. We did find that they will accept walk-in diners later in the evening if they had several no-shows earlier that day. The room we like best is dome-shaped top with stained glass. It feels like you're in a upscale dining area of a luxury ship. The surroundings are just beautiful and relaxing. ...Read More

Panera Bread Company offers freshly baked bagels, breads, muffins, pastries, cookies and other desserts. They open at 6am for all the breakfast crowd, ready to get a delicious breakfast item. The trays of pastries are very tempting, but I try to stay with a lower fat content of a sourdough bagel. The accompanying cream cheese are generously served and more than enough to cover the toasted bagel. We will order two individual servings of cream cheese for the four of us. The difficult decision is determining which flavor to get! I will also purchase a box of dozen bagels (which is really 13 bagels) to take home. They offer to slice the bagels, and I usually refuse so I can keep the bagels freshe...Read More

Chipotle restaurant offers grilled Mexican food at reasonable pries. The specialties are burritos and tacos. The burritos are made of giant flour tortillas with grilled meat (or vegetarian if so desired!), grilled bell peppers, red onion, cilantro-lime rice, sour cream, cheese and salsa. It's a meal all in itself! The taco plate includes for crispy corn tacos or three flour tortillas filled with grilled meat, cheese, lettuce and salsa. The servers are quick with the meal, making this restaurant an ideal environment for a business lunch. The tables are not crowded, giving a bit more sense of privacy. Sheridan's Frozen Custard

The temperature is 3 degrees below zero and the wind chill factor is 20 degrees below zero. We are freezing cold in the car, yet as we drive by Sheridan's Frozen Custard, there is a line of over 20 cars waiting in the drive-thru to get a frozen dessert. Not only that, there are at least 30 people standing outside, in this freezing cold, to get something cold to eat. What kind of place draws this much business for ice cream when everyone is already miserable from the cold weather? We did not try this treat until the spring when the temperatures had started warming up again. If we had known how delicious this custard tasted, we would have been in line with the winter crowd! Machine Shed Restaurant servers home style, made from scratch cooking. The restaurant stakes its reputation on the American farmer and publicizes its self as serving the best pork and beef. Dinner is served family style so you can help yourself to the coleslaw, homemade potato salad and fresh bread and real butter (no maragarine here). The portions are plentiful, but not anything outstanding. The food was good, but not great. However, the apple dumplings were great and worth getting for dessert. The restuarant is decorated with farm equipment as part of their dedication to the farmer and often times there is a person demonstrating farm related crafts. I usually don't write about national chain restaurants, but Applebees has it's headquarters in a Kansas City suburb, so it's a hometown restaurant to us. We have to laugh when our friends who work for this company (usually in office positions) show up as servers. Company employees are required to work in a restaurant so they understand the company business. Applebees is a nice, comfortable national chain restaurant. I don't know if the quality of the restaurants are better here in KC, under close scrutiny of the company's officers, but they are consistently clean and a good place to eat. The restaurant has booths, tables, or dining at the bar. Sections of the restaurant are decorated wi...Read More

Pizza Shoppe is the local pizza place. We prefer this restaurant for pizza over the national pizza places because the pizza just tastes better. The restuarants are not overly large so people do not get lost in the crowds. We've always had congenial servers, ready to refill drinks or provide more napkins. There are booths for seating up to 6 people as well as round tables for larger groups. The pizzas are quickly served once ordered. We ususally get a King pizza ($15.95 without coupons) and that feeds all of us with leftovers. I like the thin crust because its actually thin - not too doughy. Nick and Jake's is a combination of an upscale sports bar and a casual-to-upscale restaurant. The bar includes 25 television sets, allowing you to watch from just about anywhere in the bar. And the bar is very comfortable for serious relaxing and sports watching. The chairs at the bar are padded leather chairs! The restaurant portion does not feel like a chain restaurant. The food is excellent with choices such as huge steaks, veal and wild mushroom meatloaf and herb-marinated grilled chicken. They offer 10 different beers on tap and 20 wines by the glass. They have specialty martinis which I have not tried yet - probably next time. This is a wonderful place to relax and unwind, defin...Read More

The Mahaffie Farmstead is one of the last remaining stage coach stops on the Santa Fe Trail. In 1863, JB Mahaffie and his wife ran a stagecoach stop on their 570 arce farm. They served meals in their basement and provided rest to the travelers on the Santa Fe Trail. The two story house has been maintained and preserved as a historial landmark. The Historical Society has been working on the restoration of the other buildings as time permits. Various events are conducted on the farmstead throughout the year. The Old Settler's Celebration is held annually on the first weekend following Labor Day. This year is the 103rd celebration. The activities start on Thursday with the crowning of Sweet Six and Sweet Sixteen. The six-year-old contest is a cute contest full of darling little girls dressed up in their finest. The winner of the Sweet Sixteen contest is based on fund-raising. Each girl decorates a jar and places it in a local business. The girl who collects the most money wins the contest. All money collected is used towards scholarships at the local high schools (of which we are very grateful as one of my daughters received a scholarship!).
