Drive up to Deception Pass at the very northern tip of the island, and hike down to the water. It's beautiful! And definitely stay at the Inn at Langley if you can; it's wonderful.

Quick Tips:

Best Way To Get Around:

Definitely bring or rent a car while on Whidbey Island - there are only a few small towns which are spaced at least 10 miles in between.
The Inn At Langley
The accommodations at the Inn at Langley are absolutely beautiful. Our room was a one-bedroom suite, but with plenty of room for all 4 of us as the sofa opened into a large, comfy bed. The decor is very Zen - kind of a Japanese and Pacific Northwest combo of lots of natural woods, simple lines and angles, cream colored walls... basic but very elegant.

The best part of the room was definitely the massive jacuzzi-style bathtub, from which we could open up the giant windows and look out at the stars while relaxing sore muscles. Our room also had a big fireplace and stunning views of the Puget Sound, the islands across the water, snow-capped Mount Baker, and millions of stars at night.

The staff and service are fantastic - the owners are lovely and extremely helpful, and the lobby offers every amenity you could want including hundreds of movies to borrow and watch for free. The Spa at the Inn, called "Essentia" is great and offers massage, facial and relaxation treatments while you relax and look out over the water. I understand that dinners, served only Friday and Saturday nights, are out of this world, but we only had breakfast at the hotel, which was delicious.

The Puget Sound from Deception Pass
Deception Pass is a must-see when on Whidbey Island. It's actually a huge state park - thousands of acres of old-growth forest, wildlife, beaches and boating on the beautiful Puget Sound.

We spent a few hours there, first trekking across the massive bridge that spans from Whidbey over to the next island (which begins the southern-most part of the San Juan Islands) and then hiked down a steep incline almost to the water's edge. It's peaceful and extremely scenic - a great place for a long picnic lunch or even to spend a few nights camping.
