Since my search for steamed crabs in Savannah was fruitless due to the early season, I scanned the restaurant ads in the magazines for Hilton Head. Nope! I spied an ad for Parrot's Cove that offered "All You Can Eat Crab Legs". Those crabs were ready to give their all for me! Thankfully, the restaurant also offers "landlubber" meals since hubby is not a crab fan.The crab legs came with a salad of baby field greens ("weeds" to me) with a choice of dressings and some potato with steamed veggies. I ate the salad - the raspberry/balsamic vinigrette was tasty, but passed on the potato and veggies in favor of the crab legs. Our server came by as I was about halfway through my t...Read More

Day Tripping from Hilton Head

Story/Tip

One of the most popular day trips from your base on Hilton Head is to Savannah, Georgia. Depending on your time constraints, the trolley tours give you a lot of info and scenery for the money. The restaurants in the city are well known for their diversity, but my favorite food - steamed blue crabs - is not easy to find, especially early in the spring. Crab season traditionally starts around Memorial Day and goes through Labor Day. Since we visited early in May, steamed crabs were not to be found. We gave up and went shopping instead. From the City Market trolley stop, it was an easy walk to the restaurant owned by Food Network's own Paula Deen. The line outside the "Lady a...Read More

The Westin is a luxury resort and spa located at the "heel" of the "boot" that is Hilton Head. This puts it in a great location for the adventurers while on vacation. The "toe" of the island is just as easily available as the mainland. Both are just a few minutes drive in opposite directions from the front entrance. Our room was on the fourth floor and was a rough pentagon shape. Unusual, but the furniture arrangement made it work perfectly. The sliding doors opened to a small balcony complete with two chairs. Here we were serenaded by a chorus of frogs in the pond below. The daytime view was of the pond and part of the swimming pool. We were treetop high and there seemed to be a co...Read More

Grouper's Restaurant

Restaurant | "Watch Your Steak, Sir."

We decided to try the buffet at the Holiday Inn, Grouper's Reataurant, on a Sunday night. I wanted seafood - after all, I'm on an ISLAND!!! But they did not have any on the buffet (only on Friday and Saturday nights). So I ordered the shrimp po' boy from the main menu. The shrimp were the normal salad-sized, breaded critters. They were tender and sweet. The roll, on the other hand, was tough and chewy, and the overload of lettuce and tomato cubes tried to rob the shrimp of their flavor.Hubby decided to try the buffet. It featured steak. This was like an oxymorom to me. How can you have a 'steak buffet"? I was glad that I passed on this idea. Not only was the steak so...Read More
