You don't need to go to Boston for some good shopping and great bargains. Mansfield Crossing (280 School Street in Mansfield, Massachusetts) is a picturesque outdoor mall that has a little bit of everything, including an L.L. Bean store. (Gone are the days when you had to hike all the way up to Maine.) Located just off Route 140, the Crossing is just minutes away from Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts. This mall has a wonderful range of clothing stores, including Kohl's (all the way at one corner), Chicos and an Anne Taylor Factory outlet. A Borders bookstore sits on the same side as LL Bean, so we stopped in there to get our book fix and buy some fun greeting cards. We ch...Read More

Art in Norton

We wouldn't have thought of Mansfield Massachusetts or nearby Norton as destination towns, but a trip to an outdoor concert at the Comcast Center (former Tweeter Center) made us realize that this was a place to return to. So, about nine months later we did.Wheaton College, a small (1500 students) college in Norton, Mass achusetts, has history (built in 1832 as a female seminary), abundant art (including a gallery and a separate Mars Arts Humanities building featuring student art) a great Old Town Bookstore and charm galore. One day in April when we couldn't take any more winter, we checked out the Wheaton College website (www.wheatoncollege.edu) for events and learned that multi...Read More

Fine Food Where You'd Least Expect It

Cafe on the Common

Restaurant | "Belly-Busting Breakfast at Affordable Prices"

When you walk into the Cafe, which serves breakfast and lunch only (though last year thy experimented with weekend dinners during the summer--stay tuned), you'll be treated as if you've been going there forever. You're almost tempted to pick up the coffee pot and pour yourself a cup. "Take a seat wherever you'd like," someone will tell you.The Cafe is lined by sunny booths, with tables in the middle. A waitress will appear, pot in hand and get you started on morning drinks right away. The highlight here is the menu, and we dined on bannasplit waffles and stuffed blueberry pancakes. If you have a sweet tooth, this is the perfect way to start the day. The pancakes ($6.95) are a bi...Read More

Restaurant | "Fine Thai Where You'd Least Expect It"

Quote:
The Foxfield Shopping Center, just off 95 (exit 7A), seems an unlikely place for fine Thai food, so we were pleasantly surprised by a dinner of exquisite meals in a tiny (10 table) restaurant just across from a furniture store. Pictures of Buddha and Thai gardens cover the walls. For starters we had Thai rolls and Tom Yum soup. The rolls (5) were finger-sized, piping hot and filled with finely diced cabbage carrots and mixed chicken. The rolls themselves are crisp and flaky. The soup has a lovely citrus tang, plum pieces of chicken , scallion bits, mushrooms and just a hint of hot. There's an ample selection of house specialties, vegetarian meals and curries in a range of hotness tha...Read More

Fresh Catch Seafood & Deli

Attraction | "Some of the Best Seafood in New England"

Quote:
Located in a strip mall, this seafood heaven is far too easy to pass by. To make matters worse, you need to walk through its seafood deli just to get in. These are minor inconveniences which are well worth enduring.Once you find and go through the door, though, the first thing you'll see is a lovely sushi bar, crowded with happy diners. You can join them, of course, or take a seat at a table, which is what we did. There's not much in the way of decor or views here, but it really doesn't matter. The place is well lit, busy with people, but feels neither crowded nor rushed. You could easily go here for drinks and heavy appetizers, though I recommend not eating for a week and goi...Read More
