Quote: Fort Smith is a border area city located on a bend of the Arkansas River with a rich history as well as its location between two mountain ranges and National Forests.

One of the best things about a stay in Fort Smith is that you are near so much that the Ozarks and the Boston Mountains have to offer. There are ample places that you can go within but an hour drive for hiking and camping, and then there are the really beautiful mountain streams. Of many choices , one of the best places to go is the free flowing Mulberry River, about a 25 minute drive from Fort Smith that has no dam impeding its flow down to the Arkansas River. The Mulberry River flows through both Johnson and Franklin Counties in northwestern Arkansas in the Ozarks. The river flows northeast-to-southwest in the mountain areas to the north of the Arkansas River and west of Big Piney Creek throug...Read More

http://www.virtualartzone.com/thedarbyfoundation/index.htmThis is the restored boyhood home of a truly great American hero - Brigadier General William O. Darby, and about as close to s shrine as you will ever find in the world of American military special operations. In the early years of World War II, near Carrickfergus in Northern Ireland, LTC Darby established and trained the first U.S. Army Ranger forces that would eventually become the backbone of the six Ranger battalions in that war. Colonel William O. Darby was awarded three Purple Hearts, two Distinguished Service Crosses, Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Russian Order of Kutuzov and the French Croix de Guerre and at the age of thirty-fo...Read More

Perhaps the most prominent stop in a visit to Fort Smith is in going downtown to the Arkansas River and visiting the Fort Smith National Historic Site. Much of the Downtown area around the NHS was destroyed by a large tornado about five years ago and has since been completely rebuilt and is very much a thriving part of the city. The NHS is easy to spot because in the center of the old military parade ground is a 100 foot flag pole flying a 37 star flag. The flagpole and flag were visible from many miles away. Here was the original spot in 1817 that soldiers under CPT Rogers built a fort overlooking the junction of the Arkansas and Poteau Rivers. Today you can walk amongst the original remains of...Read More

Taliano's Italian Restaurant

Best Of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Lunch in the old Sparks Mansion"

Quote:
Taliano's Italian Restaurant is owned and operated by the Caldarera family and has been one of my long time favorites since childhood. This is a place to eat that is just as much about the unique atmosphere of having dinner in a beautiful 19th Century mansion as it is about some very good Italian food – a far cry from Olive Garden type places. They take great pride in the fact that their sauces, ravioli, spaghetti and all pastas are made in their kitchen using old family recipes. Because of its location, not far from Immaculate Conception Church, but off the beaten path on a side street, it is a gem you likely would not find, without a local letting you know that it is there. They are open for Lunc...Read More

Jerry Neel's Bar-B-Q

Restaurant | "A Little Bit of BBQ Heaven"

Quote:
After a morning of walking around old Fort Smith, treat yourself to some Bar-B-Que at Jerry Neel’s. You will find a lot of Bar-B-Que places in western Arkansas and Eastern Oklahoma, but let’s just say that Jerry Neel’s is a place that you will you definitely not have any regrets about going to. This is where you go for great barbeque lunch in Fort Smith.Jerry Neel’s ranks with me as the very best barbeque in town and in the region. The reason for this is their sliced beef, which is about as close to heaven as some folks might just get. It is that good! The restaurant atmosphere itself is not really all that great – because the place is always packed with lots of people. Then again, what Bar-B...Read More

Pizza Parlour

Restaurant | "A Pizza Buffet that is as Good as it Gets!"

Quote:
11:00am - 9:00pmAs things go, I really am not much a fan of Pizza Buffets – they usually tend not to be more than average (sometimes worse)– and giving any place a really good mark is a rare thing in my book when it comes to a buffet. But note – there is an exception to any rule – and in Fort Smith, that exception is Pizza Parlour. Their lunch buffet usually has about 6 types of pizza out at a time and their thin crust pizza is just really so good – and their sausage or beef and onion pizzas are excellent! And you will find the price for lunch is right as well.I have been going to Pizza Parlour for many years. This is the kind of pizza you sit back and enjoy eating - each and every...Read More

Taipei Chinese Restaurant

Restaurant | "The Best Little Place for Chinese Food in Town"

Taipei Chinese Restaurant Photo, Fort Smith, Arkansas
Quote:
There is a reason that you almost always find the Taipei packed at lunch and dinner – and it simply because is some of the best Chinese and Vietnamese food around. The service is always somewhere between great and excellent in this small family run restaurant. The hardest thing to do is to choose from which item you want. Do go for the plate lunch, with the wonderful spring rolls. My all time favorite is the Lemon Chicken, and despite a lot of travel across the globe – you will find theirs very hard to beat – it is that good! The Cashew Chicken is another good choice. But the General Tso Chicken is so good that if they could train the KBR cooks in Baghdad to make it like that – we probably would ...Read More
