Having spent a few days in Bulgaria already before arriving in Sophia we had been treated to many a Shopska salad and I was gradually going off the idea of having to be faced with another plate of chopped cabbage, carrot and feta cheese. Walking around this busy atmospheric city I kept seeing signs advertising the Taj Mahal Indian restaurant. At first I didn't mention it to my husband but kept the name and street logged in my brain. Usually when it comes to choosing restaurants we can never decide and spend hours walking around cities looking for something to eat until in the end we opt for any old one and are usually disappointed. After spending many hours sightseeing and taking photograph...Read More

During our trip to Bulgaria we decided to catch a bus from Veliko Tornovo to Sofia. The bus station is very easy to find in Veliko as it is on a street at the back of the Bingo Hall as you approach the main shopping street. A ticket can be purchased from the office at the bus station. As usual we hadn't booked a room in advance so we had to find one once we arrived in the city. Although the front of the Lion Hotel is very grand with a mellow yellow facade we actually found the hotel on a back street and went through the back entrance which was a bit narrow and dingy.Arriving in the foyer we were grumpily welcomed by a security guard posing with his mobile phone and a young girl...Read More

Dafi Hotel is a three star hotel in Plovdiv. I had seen it advertised on various websites and as we were spending a few days in Plovdiv we thought we would check it out. The reason for our trip to Plovdiv was house hunting with the intention of buying. We were also visiting other parts of Bulgaria like Karlovo, Sofia and Veliko Turnovo but Plovdiv and The Dafi were our first port of call.Leaving Krumovo airport, a very small airport which seemed at the time like a shed in the middle of nowhere, we decided to get a taxi as neither my husband or I could speak any Bulgarian. Although it is much easier than Polish! Now as every traveller knows you should really negotiate a price for the taxi b...Read More

Rousse, Ruse or Russe. Any one of these names can be used to describe the Bulgarian city I am going to review today. I will refer to the city as Russe so as not to confuse any further.Brief History of Russe.-------------------------------Having survived a long history - starting as a Thracian settlement in the second milleniun BC depending on agriculture, fishing and hunting as a way of life and fighting off other tribes the town was then transformed into a Roman town during the reign of Vespasian. The town became a fortified military and naval base situated along the northern border of Moesia. It was known as the port of sixty ships which was translated from the latin/gr...Read More

In 2007 we decided that we wanted to buy a house in Bulgaria although at the time we didn't know very much about the country. We had spent hours looking at properties on different websites and we couldn't believe some of the prices. You could buy a 3 bedroomed house for £5,000. Yes it was true, in 2007 but I doubt very much if it is now.To cut a long story short we had chosen lots of properties in the area around Karlovo. How did we get there?. We went into the travel agents and asked about flights. The young girl behind the desk said, 'Where's that?, I've never heard of it.' I thought, 'My God, it isn't that obscure, is it?'. Obviously not many people from Carlisle travel to Bulgaria but t...Read More
