Hilo Guitars and Ukuleles

Attraction | "Very Nice Electric Guitars"

I came here several times before I actually made a purchase. Hilo Guitars and Ukuleles has a nice selection of guitars, electric guitars, steel guitars, amps, and ukueles. Not only do they sell new guitars but they also sell used guitars on the second floor. When my son finally came to the store to choose an electric guitar he liked a beautiful black guitar hanging on the wall for about $170 (Jay Turser Electric Guitar). The condition was excellent and he really liked the sound. We ended up purchasing the electric guitar and a small amp (Crate) that could make all kinds of special effects sounds (for about $130). Luckily I got to hear a musician singing a Johnny Cash song in the store because he...Read More

Neptune's Garden Gallery

Attraction | "Galler With a Lot of Glass Work"

Neptune's Garden Gallery Photo, Hawaii (Big Island), Hawaii

This gallery has a lot of stained glass artwork for sale with tropical flowers and other Hawaiian scenes. They also sell glass hangings, dolls, jewelry, unique handmade gifts, and paintings by local artists. There is not a lot to look at here compared to Waipio Valley Artworks. We (my niece and I) played with a large white lab that was tied up by the back of the shop most of the time that we were there with my mom. My mom didn't care to look around that long and there was another Japanese couple there also looking around. If you like handmade Hawaiian dolls or brightly colored paintings then maybe you would like to stop at this shop. Otherwise, I wouldn't recommend looking at this shop. I would...Read More

Waipio Valley Artworks

Attraction | "My Mom and my Niece Enjoy Shopping at this Store"

Waipio Valley Artworks is a nice store to visit if you are on your way to see Waipio Valley. You can't miss it if you drive through the small, historical town of Kukuihaele. It is located in a plantation style building on the right of the road if you are going north. There is a large entrance to the main showroom and there is a small door at the north end that leads into their snack shop that serves up yummy ice cream, sorbets, sandwiches, and sodas. My niece always orders their passion fruit sorbet which is about $3 for a scoop in a plastic dish. The sorbet is very delicious and tastes like the local lilikoi fruit that grows here on the island. Their main showroom features a lot of turned koa a...Read More

Lanky's Pastries

Attraction | "Nice Bakery in Hilo Shopping Center"

Lanky's Pastries Photo, Hawaii (Big Island), Hawaii
Quote:
Lanky's Pastries is sort of a landmark in Hilo. It is one of the few surviving bakeries located at the Hilo Shopping Center. While many bakeries in Hilo have gone out of business, this bakery is still around selling their delicious pastries, cakes, homemade breads, cookies, and donuts. We like to stop at Lanky's to buy their long johns and butter rolls. They also sell bismarks, cream buns, coconut buns, bear claws, donuts, etc. They also sell delicious cakes make with guava and lilikoi fillings. Lanky's is named after its founder Tamotsu "Lanky" Kusano, who passed away in 2006. There is plenty of free parking in the front of Lanky's but come early because a lot of their delicious pastries are ...Read More

This is an interesting store located in a pink building on Mamane Street. You can't miss the building because there is a picture of a lady holding a ball on the exterior of the building. This charming pink store sells a variety of beads, sterling silver, gold and strands of beads for all of you jewelry-lovers. Not only do they sell a variety of beads for jewelry-making but they also have a small espresso bar where they serve hot and cold coffee beverages such as Espresso, Latte, Cappucino, Mocha, Chai, and a variety of hot teas, blended coffee drinks of Mocha, Coconut Mocha, White Chocolate, Spiced Chai, Chocolate Chai, and Green Tea. Hilo Shopping Center

Attraction | "Outdated Shopping Center"

Hilo Shopping Center Photo, Hawaii (Big Island), Hawaii
Quote:
This Shopping Center used to be very popular before the Prince Kuhio Plaza and the Waiakea Center was built. It is an enclosed mall with a few shops, restaurants, small businesses, a bank, a cafe, some of which are located in the inside of the mall. Kope Kope is a popular cafe that features live entertainment. Some of their businesses include Regal Travel, Oceanic Cable, State Farm Insurance, and First Hawaiian Bank. One of their long time tenants is The Seventh Gate Christian Book and Gift Store (which sells mostly Christian items such as books, bibles, and religious decorations) and Love 'N Lace (which rents out bridal and prom attire). Other than these stores I don't think that this is the mal...Read More
