Quote: Richly preserved cultural heritages that change with the region and physical features of the landscape, blend with a history that is ever present in the architechtural remains and of previous civilizations. As you wander the mountainsides and roads built long ago by the Incas, you will here the murmurs of the most well preserved and widely spoken indigineous language in the Americas. This is what one finds upon visiting the Andean countries of Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia.

For myself the highlights of any travel experience include the meeting and really having the opportunity to get to know the locals. You must go off the beaten path once or twice and take in all the spectacular and well known sights. It is important to see Machu Picchu when you visit the Cusco area of Peru, or the Otavalo Market in Ecuador, they are amazing sights, not to be missed. The distances involved in hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu are not that great. The entire 4-day trek is only 26.25 miles (42 km). However, the altitude can cause problems in the strongest hikers. For this reason all Adventure Life trips involving this hike spend a number of days at high altitude in order to acclimatize. The Machu Picchu Pilgrimage 11 Day tour spends nearly 3 days before beginning the hike and the Inca Pathways 15 Day tour spends nearly 6 days at altitude. NOTE: Many tour operators have Inca Trail tours that last only 7 or 8 days. This does NOT allow enough time to acclimatize to the altitude and clients will have greater difficulties on the trek. It is generally ...Read More

Sacred Valley of the Incas

Story/Tip

Quote:
Approximately 9 miles (15 Km) north of Cusco, Peru lies the Sacred Valley of the Incas. With an altitude nearly 2000 feet lower than the old Inca capital city and a warmer and wetter climate than that high Andean city, the Sacred Valley is rich in agriculture productivity and today produces most of the region’s wheat, potatos, corn, beans, quinoa and more. It’s importance to the Inca Empire was even greater and the Incas built great citadels, scientific stations, and cities throughout this rich valley. In effect, this rich valley was the garden of the Incas. With its great cities, protective citadels, and a climate warm enough to grow sugar cane, yet cool enough to be devoid of mosquitos, the Sacred V...Read More
