Shark Fin HouseBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Shark Fin Dim Sum and a Whole Lot More"

Great dim sum served on traditional dim sum carts.
Small dishes like har gow/shrimp balls and shu mai/pork dumplings costs $4, deluxe like fish cake in eggplant, cost $5.10 and for super deluxe dim sum dishes like sticky rice in lotus leaves and Chinese veggies with oyster sauces cost $6.50.

Authentic food at great prices. Fun to see the maitre d’s walking around dressed like FBI, talking on walkie talkies.

Great place if you want to see what you are ordering and sample authentic food like chicken feet, or congee etc.

PACKED at lunchtime so get in before noon!

Restaurant | "Here a Dumpling, There a Dumping..."

Unpretentious little restaurant with a self serve tea and water area. Popular with locals and packed at lunch. Similar to the Shanghai Dumpling house which is listed in Fodor’s Melbourne. This place has beeter service and the dumplings tastier. Other dim sum dishes available (shui mai were yummy), Shao long bao were also deliciously juicy.

Good food at a great price.

Spicy Fish RestaurantBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Best Eats in Town"

Fantastically yummy restaurant serving typically Szechuan food. By 6:30 pm this place is super busy. Located in the heart of Chinatown, and next to Cellars so you can buy your own beer and wine.

One of the popular dishes was eggplant in a claypot. Tasty, tender.
Also, I recommend the double cooked pork. Delicate and a little kick to clear out your sinuses.
Shanghai dumplings/shao long bao were super juicy, the best so far in the places I have tried.

Pancake Dessert HouseBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "A Whole Lot More than Pancakes"

This place is packed and hopping with hungry students and locals and others in search of a tasty and relatively cheap meal. Style seems Cantonese, nothing too deicate or spicy. Portions are large with lots of rice and /or noodles. $9 for bbq pork and noodles with wonton soup. Beans with black bean sauce and rice noodles, deep fried pork ribs tasted similar to calamari fried with salt and pepper. Desserts range from $5 to $7 for crepes with fresh fruit and ice cream. Nothing as decadent or sweet as Harajuku (see other review), which is why I liked it.

Also a store opposite QV shopping mall.

Szechuan Dining RoomBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Local Cheap and Yummy Eats"

We settled for Szechuan Dining Room across the way and I ordered a small plate of Sweet and Sour pork ribs $10. The dish was super small for the price but extra yummy. The spring rolls were ok, nothing too spectacular, as were the lychee and watermelong milk tea. I was also charged extra since we only ordered a little food ($1 per person). Worth coming in for the ribs though.

Other dishes looked similar to the food served at other restaurants in the Mid City Arcade - local food with good size portions (except for the small plate of ribs) with rice and noodles to fill empty bellies, and a nice topping of the main dish. Beef and veggie dishes with rice also looked yummy

Da Hu Peking Duck RestaurantBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Duck or Dinner is Divine at Da Hu Duck House"

We sampled the following dishes:
Shanghai fried noodles filled with mushroom, pork and veggies,
Hot and Sour Soup spicy and full of good stuff
Shao long boa, Shanghai dumplings juicy.

All were very good. Imagine the restaurant is popular with the locals since the menus signs and staff were bilingual. Restaurant is located upstairs, well lit and spacious, there is also a lift available if you have a stroller.

It did look like the specialty was roast duck, judging from teh number of people sitting around us that ordered duck, which is probably why it is called Da Hu Peking Duck House!

Melbourne is a really easy city to navigate through because of the parrallel streets, the clearly marked and numbered streets and public buildings, landmarks. The transportation is equally easy to use making it easy to see a lot of the wonderful sights it has to offer.

Melbourne has a ticketing system that operates on all train, trams and bus services in the metro area. You can buy one Metcard and use it on all the trains, trams and buses. You can buy these metcards at The Metshop located at teh Melbourne Town hall on corner Swanston and Little Collins Street, between 9am and 530p on Monday to Friday and 9am to 1pm on Saturday. You can also buy Metcards and day passes at 7-11 stores, train stations and various retail stores. Buses and trams sometimes sell limited selections of tickets using only coins.

The city save metcard is only for use in the city, so if you are traveling outside the city zone make sure you buy a ticket valid for the zone you are traveling into. Also, remember to validate you metcard before enter a train platform and each time you board a tram or bus.

For more info on planning, and the various metcard types: metlinkmelbourne.com.au
We all in a yellow submarine . . .
The drive back from Melbourne to Canberra took about 8 hours, with a few stops here and there. Here are two towns (in addition to Glenrowan - see my other review) where we stopped.

Banalla is off the M31/Hume Hwy and was a pretty large town with everything from gas stations to thrift stores, to grocery stores, bakeries, and pet stores. It was good our car was loaded up or I would have been tempted to get out and window shop!

Holbrook - just about 3.5 hours before you reach Canberra, is the Submarine Town. There is a clothing store, some motels, a wool museum, crafts store, church and the Holbrook bakery serving some yummy meat pies. BUT, the main attraction, of course is an old submarine which you can climb aboard and walk on. The museum is open dally from 10am to 4pm. Entry fee is $5 for adults and $2 for students. A family entry fee is $10. The museum has a large collection of submariner memorabilia including a submarine, control room with working periscope. If you want to contact them, you can email tourism@greaterhume.nsw.gov.au

There is a little cafe type restaurant as well as a playground, the submarine museum and green area for the whole family to stretch before getting back in the car for the next leg of driving.

Both these towns made good rest stops, especially for the children.

Glenrowan - Ned Kelly's Last StandBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Ned Kelly's Last Stand"

Ned Kelly standing tall
This is the town where Ned Kelly, infamous murderer was wounded and captured. He was later hanged in Melbourne Jail (Melbourne Gaol is right in city center).

This town has museums and trinkets as well as an explicit animated show of the life and times of this outlaw - often compared to America's Jesse James. Some of the museum is not recommended for faint of heart or little ones.

A small stop en route to Canberra if you are driving along Hume Hwy. Also has bakeries and a post office if you need to get out and get a bite to eat.

After my 3 year old came down with a fever and cough, I embarked on a wild goose chase looking for a medical clinic that takes walk in appointments.

Midtown medical Clinic 9650-4284
250 Collins St 4th floor
Takes walk ins and gives you a time for your appointment rather than have you sit around and wait. Basic consultation about $60 AUS.

Also recommended for walk ins by another doctor's office was
Medicalone
292 Swanston St
8663-7000

After all my walking around, I found out that there is also one on the corner by Comedy Theatre - right across from the Marriott, where we were staying. It is a pharmacy and medical office that takes walk ins. Who knew? I guess I should have checked the igougo site first!

Restaurant | "Basic BBQ Pork and mmm Good"

This is a very simple restaurant with eat in facilities.
Basic Cantonese Cuisine for eat in or take out.
The hot and sour soup was a bit thick.
Roast BBQ pork on rice ($8) was basic and yummy. Also, if you like noodles, try the fried egg noodles with beef brisket or pork with veggies ($8-$9).

View of Canberra
We decided to take the scenic route from Canberra and left around 2pm to head down to Melbourne.

Eden was the first town we stopped at. This Whaling Town makes nice stop. There is a bakery, pub, and some general town stores. Also a Whaling museum, a lookout with a great view, and playground for adults and kids to stretch out and relax before getting back on the road.

Lakes Entrance Comfort Inns

2 bedroom apartment comes with full kitchen, living and dining room area joined. There was a washer and dryer in the bathroom and a separate shower and bath as well as a laundry sink. The toilet was in a separate room with no sink in the room. Heater/AC unit was in living room but faced the hallway of the bedrooms so offset the cold/heat slightly. Room was old and painted in very bland colours, but somewhat clean and would be ok to stay for a couple of nights. Room was old and painted in very bland colours, but somewhat clean and would be ok to stay for a couple of nights.

One room had three single beds, the other bedroom right next to it had one queen bed. The windows rattled like crazy due to high winds, but the glass doors/patio style entrance seemed much more secure. However, if you like the extra security, this is not the place for you since there was only the lock for the key in the glass door and no security bar or double lock.

The view from the door was of the lake. Somewhat picturesque. We stayed upstairs which I would not recommend if you have little children because the steps are hard to manoever and carry up baggage.

Located about two blocks from cafes, supermarket and other little stores and restaurants. Right on Esplanade St which is the main street that is along the lake. A good location for walks and shopping. $190 per night.

Other hotels in the area if you are looking for something a little more upscale- Bellevue boutique hotel Also the Esplanade Resort and Spa. Those were just in the next block.

Ferryman's Seafood Cafe iis a restaurant on a boat that is popular with the locals, either because it is somewhat fancier than the other places in the environs, or because it is one of the few places open later in the evening.

Fish and chips for kids $7. Same portion of fish and chips for grown ups, but with a better fish costs $20. Desserts looked good.

We left the next morning and found a couple of towns that were a little nicer than Lakes Entrance. Just 30 minutes out of Lakes Entrance we found the Methung river and Legend Rock. You'll find the Edgewater Terrace, Elegant Perch, Rivera Nautilis and McMillano Cottages which featuring 1-4 bedroom cottages. There is also an attractive boat dock, yacht club and in the town itself, a larger complex that looks like new condos. It's called The Moorings and offers 1-3 bedroom apartments, and indoor and outdoor pool, beach houses. It looks new and clean.

Thisis a gorgeous little town right on the water, but do your research since its known for having large numbers of flies and mosquitoes in summer.

Other towns that might be worth a stop and browse.
Bairnsdale/East Gibbsland, a large town with lots of food and shopping, bike and skateboard park, aboriginal culture museums, clock museums, Den of Narqum and National Park.

Stratford, Smaller town, quaint with playgrounds and rest areas, cafes, delis and Court Theatre as well as the town library.

The total time to drive from Canberra to Melbourne partially along the coast was 10 hours. An interesting experience, but it would be equally attractive to drive down Hume hwy and then spend the extra time going past Melbourne along Ocean View drive . . . next time.

Buyer beware! You'll find lots of UGG boot sellers in the Queen Victoria market and some will even have a sign that tells you to beware of imitations. The sales people will tellyou how to spot a fake, and show you how their labels are new and the boots are the newest design. If you are looking for UGG boots, be careful because even though there were a couple of stores who were telling you to watch against imitations and fakes, their shoes also did not have the same label that is found on those Uggs you buy in the big stores. You might think about checking Uggaustralia.com to see what the UGG label looks like before spending about the same amount on a fake as you would pay for the real thing.

I ended up going to R.M in Melbourne Central Station and buying real UGGs for $50 more than they wanted in the market - AND I got a receipt! If you spend $300 you can get it duty free (I think), so if you are in the market for UGGs, think about getting the real thing! It might be worth the extra $50 and/duty tax savings . . .

Queen Victoria MarketBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Bring Lots of Shopping Bags to this Market!"

If you like to shop, like markets and knick knacks and treasure hunting, this is a must see and do whether you are in town for a day or a week, This is a covered market with over 1000 stalls selling anything and everything from food and deli to Ugg boots (mostly fakes) to toys, souvenirs, handicraft australian wood products and clothing, aboriginal art, clothes (probably the only place to get warm clothing in summer). It is quite large and colourful. The variety, colours, freshness of the fruit and produce stalls is impressive. The smells of the baked goods is appealing and inviting.

This is a great place to buy fruits and vegetables to snack on around town, in your hotel room. Also, dried fruits, sweeties/candies/lollies. There is a really appealing little storecalled Suga which makes the candy. You can watch the sugar get coloured and rolled together to make colourful lollipops or little hard candy snacks.

If you are worn out, zip into a small storefront decked out with lounge chairs and food rests, and get a quick and rejuvenating massage to soothe away your aches and pains.

lots to see and do around here,. You can easily take a couple of hours strolling around. Also some great wooden toys and puzzles and other gadgety toys for children like robots and remote controlled helicopters.

Public bathrooms scattered around the market and look fairly clean. Also you can manoever a stroller/pram through here with no problem. Bring a shopping troller or hire one for $3.

Market opens 6am and goes to 6pm (some days closes earlier). Some days not open. Check days and times before you go. Usual trading hours are Tues 6a-2p, Thursday 6a - 2p, Friday 6a-6p (general merchanidise until 4p), Sat 6a-3p, Sun 9a-4p. www.qvm.com.au

Comedy Theatre
Rocky Horror Show at Comedy theatre

Marriott Hotel is right across teh street from Comedy Theatre which was host to The Rocky Horror Show.

I couldn't resist the urge and went to purchase tickets to introduce my pre teen kids to the theatre AND Rocky Horro!

I went to several ticket places: Showbiz had a couple selections of seats - one set in the fourth row for $110 per seat, the seats further back for $90. Ticketek, just next door had a smaller selection of seats for that night, but the girl was a little more informative. She suggested that I go to the Princess Theatre which is one block up to see if they had more seats available for the same night, because they own the Comedy theatre. If they didn't have any bigger selection of seats, she recommended I still ask for the "Brad and Janet' special. I got to the Princess Theatre 15 minutes before it closed and managed to get three of the last 8 seats that they had available for that night. $89 per ticket. BUT, with the Bad and Janet special, i got each ticket for $49. That's what I call a good tip! So, I managed to get three seats for a little more than what I was going to pay for 1 ticket!

Also, the girl at the Ticketek office told me that the Comedy theatre is an older theatre, very intimate, so not to worry even if I was in the very back. She was right again. We were three rows from the back in Row "P", and had an EXCELLENT view! i think it would have been too close to be right in the fourth row where I originally was going to get a seat!

The Rocky Horror show was fantastic. Great sets, music, acoustics, singing, acting and so forth. This was the first time i saw it live and was not disappointed. It had its usual sexual innuendo and physical acting out, but the exaggeration, the music and experience of live theatre was more of the focus for my pre teens. I am sure some parents would not advise taking their children, but the great ticket price, the locale and the fabulous music was just too great an attraction for me to pass up.

Great way to spend the evening! Made me want to go see Mamma Mia!

A wonderfully serene and beautiful place to walk, sit and relax. This garden/park has a small lake with ducks and some fish, a huge tree for children to run and hide under, as well as glorious trees and flowers lining the paths to the house and fountain.

Scenic and a great place for children to get out and stretch their legs. Also make sure you go to the playground behind the museum (on the other side of this garden area) for more areas for the children to run.

This is a nice place to relax and picnic between city stops.

Camy Shanghai Dumpling RestaurantBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Good Dumplings vs Surly Service"

A very basic, very popular restaurant (featured in Lonely Planet Melbourne). Great prices on dumplings, steamed or fried (15 pieces for $6). The restaurant is partly self serve - you get your own menu and bowls, cuppa tea. The hustle and bustle atmosphere, no frills decor, and somewhat surly waiters and waitresses were manageable because the food was pretty no frills good.

Great portions and ok taste for the price. Popular, perhaps because featured in the Lonely Planet Melbourne. Worth checking out. But if you are looking for friendlier service and more authentic atmosphere, go next door to Shanghai Noodle House.

Attraction | "Perfect for the Whole Family"

Melbourne Museum

This is a fantastic museum with half a dozen large galleries - Melbourne gallery (the story of Melbourne), Forest gallery (shows the life cycle of a forest), Mind and Body gallery, with an interactive gallery and detailed models ranging from optical illusions to scuptures of the human body. Great interactive exhibit.

There is also the Aboriginal art and history section, with an outdoor aboriginal 'garden' exhibiting native plants that might be used by aboriginal tribes for medicinal and health purposes.

There is a Life Science area which features animals and the ever popular dinosaur exhibit, however, unfortunately for us, this exhibit was closed for renovations.

Probably the best section if you have young children, is the Children's Gallery which features in door and outdoor play areas, archeological digs, legos, dinosaur dress up, puzzles and toys and a mini child size and child level museum exhibit with hands on and low displays.

The museum also has an extensive range of IMAX films and a Discovery Center that allows you to do more research on your favourite subject, use computers and books, as well, as allow the children to colour and look through the specimens featured in large glass containers around the research room.

It's worth buying food at the cafe, which offers healthy meals for adults and kids for $3 to $12, and spend a few hours at the museum exploring and wandering around.

Open daily 10 am to 5pm except on Good Friday and Christmas Day. $6 for adults entrance and free for children ages up to 16 years old. Easily accessed from the City Circle Tram's Victoria Parade stop or a 20 minute walk from Federation Square. museumvictoria.com.au

IMAX admission prices: adult $17.50 and child $12.50 or family $50. Feature length movies shown on IMAX screens are priced differently. The movies playing when we were there were Batman and Haunted Mansion.

New Kum DenBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "New Restaurant but Same Good Old Food!"

We found an empty restaurant down a seemingly empty alley, filled with large delivery trucks. Though it opened at 11am and it was now 1125am, the restaurant was empty which is usually not a good sign. however, we chanced it and was happy to note that the food arrived hot and fresh and delicious. We only ordered a few samples of dim sum at the average price of $5 each basket, The bbq pork buns were quite delicious. We left close to noon and the restaurant was still empty. Later in the day we found out that the original restaurant is two streets up but, unlike the "new" restaurant, the original restaurant was pack filled with locals. Guess that's why they opened restaurant #2. The locals just haven't discovered it yet. All the better for you. Give it a shot.

Try the deep fry spicy calamari with salt and pepper and the Shanghai dumplings - juicy and delicious

Restaurant | "Noodles, Dumplings and Atmosphere"

Shanghai Noodle House

This is a really family owned restaurant, with large family style tables that pulled apart when the restaurant started to fill up. The menu is handwritten in English and Chinese with the price, on colourful 8x11 inch sheets of paper and plastered around the restaurant as well as appearing in the menu.

Again, no frills decor, and self serve to tea, bowls, and utensils but the food was inexpensive and good. I like the hustle and bustle and feel that I am in someone's house/kitchen rather than a too sterile artificial large, touristy restaurant. Don't be afraid to go in because it looks packed with locals or the wait staff don't always speak English!

We had the fried dumplings, wonton soup, and fried noodles. The total fed two teenagers, a three year old and myself for a very reasonable $22 AUS.

Next time I want to try the spicy fish or spicy pork over rice. . . .

The food was excellent, and service fast. If you are sensitive to MSG, be careful because I suspected from my headache later on in the afternoon, that they used MSG in their dishes. chicken satay, beef mussamam, phad thai, basic chicken and red curry.

There were desserts on the menu, but, unfortunately, we were far too full to try any of those.

Restaurant | "Little Restaurant with Great Food"

Small rest, favourite of many local chinese. It serves authentic tasting chinese /cantonese dishes ranging from standard BBQ pork and roast duck hanging in the window to eggplant chicken with vegetables. Classic round tables and authentic tasting food, fresh flaavours, tender meats and clean atmosphere.

Hotel | "Great Location"

Marriott - Melbourne VIC
nr Exhibition and Lonsdale St

Great location:

1 block from theater
2 blocks from Chinatown
2 blocks from free city tram
Pool was closed due to a building accident (something from next door building shattered the glass panels in the ceiling)

The rooms and bathroom were a fair size with a Playstation and TV (old with poor resolution)
2x queen bed
The usual clean accomodation and great service.
A business lounge with computer and a restaurant in lobby

Usual Marriott service and style. Grand location in center of town.
