Asking our Concierge how to get there, we stood in the rain to await the Bus from Colmar to Freiburg. Sure enough the bus arrived, but it was going to an (to us) undecipherable location, so we waited. And waited. Fortune shone when Leda, a kind hearted French speaking woman saw us from the bus, and literally dragged us on it. She explained in French and broken English that the route had changed, and that we were to take this bus and then a train to get there.
We talked (with wild conclusions on both sides) in pidgeon French, German and English as she explained the countryside highlights.
She took us through the train station and made sure we knew how to get back.
This trip bonded us to Colmar and her people and to the pure joy of plans going wrong.
Quick Tips:
St. Martins Hotel is a family owned moderately expensive place located in the Center of Colmar.
Take the Quasimoto tour to Riqwhir, the driver's history goes way back.
Buy lots of Pate, there is none better.
Best Way To Get Around:
We walked everywhere, including dragging our luggage the mile and a half from the train station.
There is a bus that takes you to the wine route villages and is easy to manage.
There is a little tourist train that tours the town with commentary - well worth it for orientation.
