Day 1

Lake George Steamboat CompanyBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Dinner Cruise Aboard the Lac du Saint Sacrement"

Top of the cruise ship
Lake George steamboat company offers several cruises which tour this massive lake. We chose the dinner cruise (which covers an all-you-can-eat buffet dinner, provides music with a live band, and a 4-hour scenic tour of the lake. We were given assigned seating so we were lucky enough to have a table to ourselves with a lovely view next to the window.

The lake is gorgeous, the tour guide does an average job of explaining the history of Lake George, the vast species of fish and wildlife that make its habitat there, and the huge mansions and water front properties which several of the well-known celebrities occupy. I would highly suggest taking at least one of these cruise tours of the lake because it's very soothing and relaxing. I would also suggest booking the tickets in advance when it's tourist season as the boats really get filled to capacity.

The buffet dinner was disappointing, the food was bland and there really was no variety. If you are a picky eater then consider booking the non dinner cruises, you are better off eating dinner before and then going or having snacks with you on the boat. If they make a few adjustments in the dishes then I would say it's worth spending the extra for the buffet. I think this was the only complaint I had as everything else was smooth sailing including the music which was a variety of 80s and 90s. People were dancing and having a great time, I am pretty sure they felt the same about the buffet and made the best of it. I would also suggest taking a sweatshirt with you because at night, even in the summer the winds are cool and you will end up feeling cold if you are out on top of the deck.

So in summary, I would suggest this cruise only to those who really are not picky eaters and do not mind the bland food. Otherwise you will have a great time, dancing and enjoying the gorgeous views of the lake.

Alynn's Butterfly Inn Bed & BreakfastBest of IgoUgo

Hotel | "Weekend Stay at Allyn's Bed and Breakfast"

View from far away
I decided two days before the labor day weekend to have a getaway to Lake George and ended up looking all over the internet to find a decent hotel with sane rates. After failing miserably, I found this bed and breakfast online and luckily they had a room available so I called and booked it for about $160 per night plus tax. I have never really stayed at a bed and breakfast before so this was a first time experience and it was a great one.

Al and Lynn are excellent hosts, they own and run this bed and breakfast and do a lovely job. They made sure we were taken care of and gave us directions and advice to get around Lake George. This bed and breakfast is located about a 10-minute drive from the heart of Lake George so it's perfect in the sense that you get to get away from the noisy, crowded town area and get to enjoy the calm and peaceful environment of Warrensburg while not being far away from the hub of Lake George.

The room called the pink butterfly room (don't let the name fool you) was clean and well kept, the bed was comfortable and the in room jacuzzi was a nice touch. The breakfast that Lynn cooked was delicious and it just made our stay there even better. All the attractions are within a 10 minute drive so the location is perfect, also the price isint too high considering most hotels during a busy weekend charge $200 and up.

The bed and breakfast also has a big back lawn where you can just relax and read a book while sitting on a bench. This bed and breakfast really makes you feel comfortable and relaxed, from all the cozy furniture to the hammock outside, it all makes you feel very homely. I would gladly go back and am considering returning next year. I would highly suggest this bed and breakfast to any one who is visiting Lake George and wants a relaxing getaway while enjoying all the benefits of visiting this beautiful city.

Gino and Tony's PizzeriaBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Lunch at Gino and Tony's Pizzeria"

Lunch at a restaurant on this busy street and weekend can be challenging since there are long lines but if you go at the right time then you can dine at Lake George's best. Unfortunately, I lucked out and could not wait to dine at some of the fancy places here so decided to eat at this family restaurant instead. Although it's a pizzeria, you can still order some hot meals such as spaghetti with meatballs. This place is not fancy but when a meal for two costs less then $40 for two dishes, appetizers and drinks then you really can't complain.

The appetizers are good here, in particular the mozzarella sticks and the chicken fingers. The main dishes that I tried was the pizza which was really good and the spagetti and meatballs. All this food was better than I expected it to be and although this is not the best Italian food you will ever have, it's certainly worth the bargain it is.

The service was excellent, food was served warm and our drinks were always promptly refilled. All of our requests made to the waitress were followed and we were always greeted with smiles so service was pretty good and they definitely earned the tip. The service definitely makes it feel like a family run business so thats always a good thing. The decor further adds to the family oriented atmosphere and it's straight forward with clean tables and chairs. The bathroom was clean and although this is a tiny place, you don't feel cramped which is another plus.

You simply cannot go wrong with lunch here given the prices and the service, not to mention to non present lines. The food is good, service is excellent, and the prices are good so you cannot simply go wrong here. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants a quick lunch without sacrificing their newborn for a meal.

Day 2

Prospect moutainBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Visit to the Prospect Mountain"

View from top
If you have time and want scenic photos then take a trip to the prospect mountain park. The drive up the mountain is gorgeous and there are several scenic view spots along the way where you can park your car and take some really awesome photos. I would suggest getting a nice camera so that your photos can capture a lot of the details which surround this beautiful city.

The park at the top of the mountain makes for good family fun as there are picnic tables and BBQ grills where you can have a good time checking out the views and eating. I would highly suggest bringing food with you here so that you can sit on a table and have a nice picnic. There will be families and couples all over taking photos so its a good way to spend some time relaxing during the day.

If you are visiting in the summer then I would recommend carrying bottles of water with you and to also wear comfortable shoes. There isint any shops or restaurants any where on the mountain so to get any thing means you have to exit the park and the mountain and go to the nearby town. There is a bit of history there as well as old cable cars were used to transport goods back and forth so if you are interested then there are signs with information on them.

The prospect mountain also has trails where hikers can choose and enjoy scenic hikes so that makes a good activity in the summer. This mountain also has snow sports in the winter so this attraction is open all year round and caters to all seasons. I would highly suggest this if you have some time on your vacation and want to just relax and enjoy some scenic photos.

The town of Lake George is where you have all the restaurants, shops, and hotels. This area is where all the tourists come so it gets crowded here on weekends, especially in the summer so be prepared for traffic and long lines when dinning or cruising. There is a lot to do here and the tourist office is a good stop if you want to check out all the attractions that are offered here. There is para sailing, white water rafting, camping, hiking trails and so forth so enough things to do for every one.

I would suggest parking your car in the lot and then walking around this area because street parking here is hit or a miss and you have to keep putting in quarters which gets annoying after a while. The traffic cops are also every where so expect parking tickets if you run out of quarters. This can be a headache so unless you have a lot of time and patience waiting around for a parking spot, I would just recommend parking in a lot and use that time for some thing else.

There are a lot of restaurants so I would suggest making reservations beforehand or else you will end up eating at a fast food place. The variety of restaurants is impressive, if you walk around then you are bound to find a restaurant to your liking. There are also a lot of shops here if you want to buy souvenirs, I would suggest vising a couple of them and then settling on an item and the price.

While I did not have enough time to do para sailing and many of the other events, I can see myself going back next year and tackling many of them. The local people are nice and I can see why so many New yorkers make a trip here yearly. This was my first time here and I am glad that every thing worked out even with all the last minute planning. I really enjoyed Lake George even though its becoming too touristy. If you are living in New York then its a great, quick getaway and will replenish you before you head back to work.
