Beauty in New England

Overview

Quote:
Vermont is a state for those who love and appreciate natural beauty. Just driving through the Green Mountain National Forest can bring delight and joy to the eye. One is even more fortunate since there are some excellent restaurants all around. Even the areas known mostly for skiing such as Okemo, Stratton Mountain etc. are a pleasure to visit and hike through the groves of trees and climb the gentle hills. Quick Tips: Bring hiking boots and a canteen for more extended treks. One can get excellent maps from the visitors centers and from the Forestry service.Best Way To Get Around: There is little public transport and a car is definitely a must, although we saw many bicyclists on the ...Read More

We found this place listed in a book on B&Bs in New England and after checking out their website and checking location on the map and calling the owner we decided to go there for three nights. What a find this place was. There are 6 rooms in an old but well rebuilt colonial house. Each room is of different size and prices vary accordingly. There is a delightful library, a music room and a formal and beautiful dining room where Paul Quinn, the owner serves an extremely well-prepared and daily varying and highly filling breakfast. We had waffles, then banana French toast, and next a light and very tasty quiche. Of course juices, coffee, tea and fruit in various offerings also comes to the table. JoAnne,...Read More

Barrows House

Restaurant

This restaurant is part of an elegant Inn in Dorset with beautiful grounds and set in a lovely old and rather large house. Dinners include such items as crab cakes, duck breast, pork loin, steak, veal picata and is served with potatoes and fresh vegetables. The service is very friendly and reasonably quick. Desserts are wonderful and forbidden fruit for a diabetic like me. The crab cakes were about $13.00 and the duck breast was $18.00. Both were excellent although the vegetables were served too cold.

Clearly the most impressive thing about the maontains in Vermont is the natural beauty. There are hiking trails, there are ski lifts that operate in the summer and take you to the top of the mountain. There are swimming holes, albeit mostly rather cold. The corn had just ripened when we were there and the local corn is a delight to the palate (Sugar and Gols is my favorite). Never forget though, to visit some of the small towns such as Weston (a true picture post-card town) and Chester and even Ludlow, although the latter is overburdened with shopping malls. Danby is very pretty, sitting on old U.S.7. Manchester is very close to Dorset, where we stayed and is the local shopping area. It is overrun wit...Read More

Dorset Theater

Attraction

Quote:
This is a well located Summer Stock Theater which attracts acting stars from the major centers such as New York and I believe even Hollywood. It's program varies throughout the season and includes dramas as well as comedies. It probably holds 200 people (I didn't count them). Dress rehearsals are free and many locals attend those leaving the paying tickets to the out-of-towners. There is ample parking.
