Attraction | "A Rabbit Warren of so Much to See!"

Having just had a picnic lunch in the Botanic Gardens next door (though it was August and so winter and the gardens were not in their prime!), I wandered into the Canterbury Museum. The building itself is Victorian and looks quite grand walking in - in fact you don't realise what you are really getting yourself into - as beyond is what can only be described as a large rabbit warren of rooms filled with a huge array of different exhibits. Admission is techincally free - though donations are strongly encouraged - so its up to you how much you think its worth or can part with. The Museum has more than two million collection items which cover the stories of early Maori, European settleme...Read More

Christ Church Cathedral

Attraction | "Christchurch Cathedral "

From Tower Photo, Christchurch, New Zealand
Quote:
When you see Christchurch Cathedral it does not seem too surprising to discover that Christchurch was founded by English settlers. Work began in 1864, with a design by George Gilbert Scott, who was a noted English architect who is responsible for many church buildings in England but also Pancreas Station in London. He is known for his Gothic Revival style, which shaped the design of Christchurch cathedral. It is set in the centre of Cathedral Square, which was designed to be at the heart of the city, and so is one of the oldest buildings in New Zealand.Being from Ireland, I am quite used to cathedrals that have ancient roots, but I was impressed with the cathedral in Christchurch, even if ...Read More

Trams in the Square Photo, Christchurch, New Zealand

Most cities have tour buses to see the sights, however Christchurch does it in style with a tram system. Having lived in Manchester and Dublin, trams for me are modern transport system used to commute, but Christchurch's trams are definitely a tourist mode of transport heading around 2.5km of a tramway through the city centre. There had been a tram system operating in the city from 1882 until 1954 - intially horse and steam trams and later electric trams. It has been partially reopened as a tourist attraction with beautifully restored historic trams operating on a short loop of the city centre, nothing like the tram network there had been. The drivers give commentary as the trams glide along with freq...Read More

Restaurant | "Ginkgo - Quiet"

Quote:
Dinner on a Saturday night normally means a busy bustling restaurant but this wasn't at all what happened on my visit to Ginkgo. In the city centre, this place is relatively easy to find and also has parking spaces behind the building down an alleyway, but it is well-lit. The decor of the restuarant is pleasant enough, with lots of interesting objects displayed around the room. It is a lovely spacious room but with screens and shelves of objects it doesn't seem cavenous. There is a waiting area with soft seating, and the dining area has a wide range of table sizes. However, Saturday night dinner here was rather without atmosphere as only there were only two tables of diners. Nor was the at...Read More

Arts Centre

Attraction

Arts Centre Photo, Christchurch, New Zealand
Quote:
The Arts Centre is based in the old buildings of the University of Canterbury, which are in revival Gothic in style. The university moved out due to lack of space in the 1970s leaving behind these buildings. This a lovely and interesting place to visit with lots of nooks and crannies to explore with quadrangles and different entrances. It houses a two-screen cinema which show arty-cultural films - both are small theatres and so feel quite intimate. I enjoyed a showing of a New Zealand film here one cold damp Saturday morning before wandering around the market. The centre is also a home to several performance spaces and galleries. The current events and shows can be found on the events calender on the ...Read More
