Poland was the very first country I visited in Europe and it was an excellent choice. I went with people who grew up in Poland and I stayed in a small and quaint town named Bielsko-Biała.Upon arriving in Katowice, Poland, it seemed like any other small city on the surface—more green than concrete, less hustle and bustle—but a closer look at my surroundings were very interesting. During the drive from the airport to Bielsko I was fascinated by the basic differences I noticed from my country: the people, their clothing; highway signs; billboards; homes; cars. Everyone told me that before we go crazy and loose control in Krakow (in a good way), we had to go visit Wawel Castle and they were right. It's an amazing attraction that's best viewed pre-hangover. During the off-season it's just as wonderful and lively with outdoor music, great hiking and general sightseeing. Visiting some of the surrounding mountain provides great expansive views of Zakopane. There are several affordable B&Bs and nice restaurants in the area. Stores providing hiking gear are around too but the prices are quite hefty. It's a great place to visit and take in the subtle differences in this part of Poland compared to Warsaw or Krakow. The area has a very c...Read More
