Short trip to Hawaii

A March 2000 trip to Honolulu by katkids

Quote: Our visit was really too short. We didn't realize there was so much to do and not enough time to do it, especially when my husband came down with a bad case of tinnitus and couldn't wear shoes or do much walking due to the pain. However we made the best of it. We still managed to get a lot of shopping in and the trip around the island was beautiful. The North Shore of the Island was my favorite. It's not as crowded and the drive revealed some very nice beaches away from the crowds. It's truly fascinating to watch the ocean meet with the huge rocks along the water's edge. There really isn't any better place to go except maybe one of the other islands for a day's excursion. Flights to the other islands are very inexpensive and can either be bought through the airlines or one of the other many agents through the internet. Just do a search on Hawaii and you'll be surprised at what you can find.

Short trip to Hawaii

Overview

Quote:
We really enjoyed just driving around the island. It is such a beautiful place with great beaches everywhere. Our most enjoyed time was watching the Japanese parade down Kalakaua. We timed that just right and was amazed by the culture and activities. We also enjoyed a tour at Pearl Harbor, a very sombering experience with great historical value. Quick Tips: I was suprised to find small restaurants that weren't very expensive with good food. I actually had a steak with lobster for .95, which was a good portion. A quick tip would be not to rent a car unless you absolutely need it. There's not much parking and the hotels charge whether you are staying there or not. Most everything in Wa...Read More

The accommodations were very nice. The lobby was very inviting and gave you the feel of Hawaii. We had a great oceanview room which was actually a one bedroom Condo, complete with small kitchen, utensils and everything needed for a short or long term stay. We were two blocks from the beach but still had a great view of the ocean and the price was right. There was also a conceriege desk that was well informed about local events and things to do. Overall, it was a very nice place to stay and will go back at some point.

Pearl Harbor is definitely a must see activity. It is a unique experience and makes you feel almost like you are a part of what happened. It's a great history lesson for the younger folks who are not sure exactly what happened on that December day. It's quite interesting to actually be able to see the ship laying at the bottom of the water and the oil spill which still comes up as well. If you rent a car, you can take yourself and save some money. The tours are kind of expensive and the actual cost to get in is very minimal.

Don Ho Show

The dinner is first which was wonderful. Included is one drink with dinner. The show starts immediately after dinner with none other than Don Ho. He still puts on one heck of a show, and if you're lucky enough his daughter Hoku may be there as well. She's got a beautiful voice. He also had a couple of other singers as well. One of them was the spitting image of Ricky Martin and did an excellent imitation of Elvis, dance and all. This is a must see show. Afterall, what's Hawaii without Don Ho!
