Quote: While attending a wedding of a family friend in Key West, we had some time to explore the area, get our fill of shrimp and catch a sunset. From our arrival in a 8 passenger plane to our flight delays en route home, it was an interesting time.

We chose this hotel for its price andthe fact it was a totally non-smoking property. We were pleasantly surprised by the pool, friendly staff and location - across the street from Key West Yacht Club where would be attending a wedding reception.
Rooms were adequate, very clean and well appointed. The pool area was large with plenty of lounge chairs and tiki bar. Each morning there was an extensive breakfast buffet at poolside. Ahi rentals is located on site for bike and scooter rentals.
The location was in a commercial area with many fast food restaurants and shopping plazas nearby. It was a short drive to old town and Mallory Square.

Half Shell Raw Bar is a casual bar/seafood restaurant in the harbor at Key West. We were seated in the open air dining room that's decorated with license plates from all over the country. We did not the time or appetite for a big meal before our attending a wedding but needed to sample some of the local seafood. An order of conch fritters and pound of steamed peel and eat Gulf shrimp satisfied our yearnings.
The menu includes clams, oysters, shrimp and crab (in season) from the raw bar. Conch chowder and fritters are unique to the Keys. They also have burgers, salads, chicken, vegetarian lasagna, and other seafood items.

A great way to learn the history of Key West and travel through the city is on the Conch Tour Train. The 90-minute tour provides a unique look at the architecture, lush vegetation, tourist spots and neighborhoods of the Conch Republic. If you overlook the corny jokes and typical tourist photo at the start of your ride, it is a fun and informative experience. You will see the southernmost point in the continental US, the first bar - Green Parrot - and the apartment building where Hemingway penned "A Farewell to Arms" on his first visit to KW. The train takes you through the Cuban neighborhood as well as the popular Duvall Street. We also passed St. Mary's Star of the Sea church, where the wedding ...Read More

Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square

Mallory Square comes to life each evening as the sunset approaches. There are street performers, vendors and lots of tourists at this daily event. Bring your camera and be prepared to move through the crowds to get a good view as the sun sets over the western-most point of the Florida Keys.
Once the sun goes down, everyone heads for Duval Street with it's many bars, restaurants and night spots. Sloppy Joe's the most popular but you have your pick of music, menus and hangouts along Duval.

Our plane vs the President's. Photo - Key West, Florida
Quote:
On our trip to Key West we had a stopover in Fort Meyers, FL. Our flight was delayed due to the arrival of President Bush - no air traffic is allowed when Air Force One is approaching. When we finally landed, we hurried for our connecting flight. As we approached the check-in desk, we were asked our weight and that of our luggage. They spent a long time figuring out how many passengers could board the 8 seater plane, how much of the baggage could be stowed and the seating arrangements. When we finally boarded the small aircraft, the pilot suggested taking a photo of our plane with Air Force One in the background - quite a contrast! We were the last plane to take-off before the airport was again ...Read More
