Wirtshaus Zum Lämmle is one of my favorite restaurants in Würzburg, Germany. It is not a gourmet place, but a place to go when you're hungry and want a high quality, full meal at a reasonable price. That sums-up the Wirtshaus Zum Lämmle.

The restaurant is a delightful place with an interior that includes a "Keller" dining room in the evenings and a ground floor dining room/bar during the lunch hour and and the rest of the dining day. Another 150-200 guests can be seated outside in the beer garden during good weather.

The food is very good to excellent and the portions are large, indeed (you will not leave hungry). The menu is largely Franconian (Frankisch in German) with a good selection of entrees including different schnitzels, wurst, schweinsbraten, eisbein (pork shank), cordon bleu and other Frankisch selections. Altogether, the menu is quite complete with reliably good quality. The wine list is very good and quite reasonable because much of the wine is produced by local vintners. English menus are available.

As an aside, a comment I read recently criticized German and European restaurants because the dinners were not served at the same time. Well, that's the way it is in much of Europe. When the food is ready, it comes to the table. It is not held under a heat lamp, it is served fresh and that's the way it is... At Wirtshaus Zum Lämmle, service is indeed German, friendly, efficient, and professional.

An important thing about most countries, Germany, especially; if you try to speak a little German, the staff will try to speak English and you will learn a lot more about the town. As an example, I learned about Wirtshaus Zum Lämmle through a waiter in a different restaurant. Attempting to speak a little German, I asked him for the restaurant he would frequent besides the place he worked. He recommended Wirtshaus Zum Lämmle and a few others which I will review later. The server at this restaurant recommended another place for me to try. If you go during off-peak hours, the kitchen and bar staff will gladly give you lots of excellent information. It's another way to experience a location.

In total, prices are very reasonable, the decor is charming (see photographs), the staff is excellent, and the food is very good. I never miss this restaurant when I am in Würzburg.

Sternback in Würzburg is a super place just off the main marketplace in the old city. After crossing the "Alte Brücke" (Old Bridge), just walk to the fountain and it is just off to the right. (I did not take any exterior photographs because the front of the building was being renovated during my last visit in April, 2009.) The interior of this gasthaus provides a super atmosphere with lots of dark wood, an actual "bar" and the most "appropriate" barroom mural that I have ever seen. There is an exterior beergarten with menu service as well.

The food is excellent, hearty, reasonably priced and the portions are more than large. German food is generally fairly heavy, with a stick-to-the-ribs quality that is not fancy, but great tasting and wonderfully satisfying. English speakers are welcome, and the service is prompt.

Some restaurants have extensive menus and mediocre preparation. This restaurant is the opposite. While the menu is limited, what they serve is perfectly prepared and presented. The food quality is excellent and, as mentioned, the service is prompt, friendly, and professional. My favorite entree is the "Panniert Schnitzel Wiener Art" which is a huge piece of the pork loin, pounded thin, and then perfectly breaded and sauteed in oil. It is served with what seems like a full pound of french fried potatoes which are basic, flavorful, and remain crispy throughout the meal. Other entrees include chicken, "Brotzeitbrettl" (a cold meat and cheese platter), different kinds of "wurst," as well as various salads.

In Würzburg, wine and beer are of equal importance. The area is world-known for its superb white wines (Franconian) and the city has several good breweries so liquid libation is varied and plentiful.

This is another of my favorite restaurants in Würzburg. I enjoy both the indoor and outdoor atmosphere, and on a nice, sunny day my only decision is where I will sit. While everything here is good, when I'm in the mood for schnitzel, I'm in the right place.
