The city of York is home to a number of characterful pubs. Many have ghost stories attached to them, some are renowned for their historic interiors but the best are notable because they serve the excellent beers made by the York Brewery. Recently we have become really interested in real ales and micro-brewing, partly because there are some excellent tipples being made, and partly because we live near a large hop growing area in Slovenia; since most beers brewed in the UK are made using Slovenian hops, we feel a bit closer to our adopted motherland when we are in the UK drinking a pint of real ale. Although there are several decent pubs in which to sample the York Brewery’s beers, we decide...Read More

York's 'Mumbai Lounge' is a rather slick contemporary Indian restaurant on the city's Fossgate. We turned up at Saturday lunchtime at the end of the half term week when the city was teeming with tourists but we didn't have a problem getting a table. In fact the restaurant was rather quiet and we were given a table in the window and right beside the door; only a couple of other tables were occupied and probably as a result the service was on the whole too attentive and verging on the obsequious at times. Yes, the slightly shimmery salwar kameez the waiters wore looked great but they appeared rather too frequently around the table and I soon tired of them. This is a fairly glitzy establishme...Read More

The brief: to find a reasonably priced (cheap) bed and breakfast close to the train station and within walking distance of the centre of York for one night only. Not as easy as it sounds. York is a year round tourist destination and the cheapest rates often only apply if you are staying at least three nights. We were also looking at short notice and found that many of those that did not stipulate a three night stay were fully booked already. The York Tourist Information website came up with the Holmlea as a possibility and a visit to their own website showed an even cheaper rate of £45 for a double room without private bathroom. We made our reservation by telephone, giving our c...Read More

It wasn't too difficult to find Bombay Spice, conveniently located in the centre of the city on Goodramgate. First impressions were very favourable; the exterior is attractive and well-maintained. There were no other diners when we entered the restaurant though admittedly it was fairly early in the evening. We were shown to a table right in the window - presumably to give passers-by the impression that the place was busier than it really was. At this point we showed our brochure from the tourist information office which mentioned a twenty per cent discount upon presentation and this was accepted immediately without a problem. Our next enquiry was about the presence of nuts in the food and we...Read More
