couple of years ago while in Bonn, I noticed a mouthwatering display of seafood sandwiches laid out in the hatched window of a shop. They looked delicious but we had just arrived in Bonn and weren't ready for lunch. The following year I noticed another branch in the Austrian city of Graz but it wasn't until a few months later that I finally got to sample some of the piscatorial delights of "Nordsee" while in Hannover. Not surprisingly, "Nordsee" translates as "North Sea" and is a chain of fishmongers and adjoining cafes/restaurants selling and serving fish and seafood with branches throughout Germany and Austria; some cities have several branches, often quite close together which is an in...Read More

We didn’t have a lot of time in Hannover and as rain seemed to loom we decided that the best thing to do would be to jump on a guided bus tour as the leaflet claimed that it took in most of the major sights. We booked a few hours in advance at the Tourist Information Office opposite the main train station on Ernst-August-Platz and were advised of the start time and to meet in front of the office. When we arrived there were two coaches there and you could get on whichever you liked. It was a new and modern coach, highly comfortable yet not that great for sightseeing due to the position of the windows. We were the only two English people on our coach, everyone else was German. As I can speak...Read More
A Hannover symbol - a nana Photo, Hannover, Germany

One of the most memorable and eye catching sights of Hannover must surely be Niki de Saint Phalle's "Nanas" - those brightly coloured polyester stylised ladies of rather generous proportions that are seen around the city. The artist was born in Paris in 1930 and died in San Diego in 2002. In the 1950s she was exhibiting in the "Nouveau Realistes" shows and created major works that can be seen in cities such as Stockholm and also exhibited at the World Exposition in Montreal in 1967. In spite of a somewaht negative response from some Hannoverians to the Nanas, they are now regarded fondly by most of the city's citizens and the majority of visitors who see them. They were install...Read More

I booked the Mercure Mitte in Hannover because the cheaper accommodation was quite a distance from the centre and I took advantage of a promotional rate through the Mercure chain's parent company Accor. We booked on line and about a week before I e-mailed the hotel directly to say that we would be arriving very late on the Friday night. I received a prompt response saying that this was not a problem and that check-in was possible until 1.00 a.m.The hotel is situated just on the edge of the centre of the city, a five minute walk from the central shopping area and pretty Old Town. The Christuskirche underground station is just around the corner. There are plenty of bars, eating places and s...Read More

Himalaya occupies a pleasant spot overlooking the Klagesmarkt, just around the corner from the Christuskirche and the underground station of the same name. It's also just footsteps from the Mercure Mitte hotel. There are some nice outdoor tables but alas it was raining when we visited on a Saturday night so we went inside. We had no problem getting a table without a reservation but it was during the Euro football championships and this might have kept people at home. The interior is rather disappointing. Stark white walls - although there a few attractive paintings with Indian themes - and rather tired booths by the window and tables and chairs elsewhere. Perhaps some re-upholster...Read More
