Attraction | "An Island getaway - Helsinki Zoo"

Helsinki Zoo Photo, Helsinki, Finland
Quote:
Helsinki’s Korkeasaari Zoo is one of the city’s chief attractions and it’s not just the opportunity of seeing a range of animals that makes it such an interesting place to visit. The Zoo is situated on the island of Korkeasaari, in fact the whole island IS the zoo. It’s an attractive environment and the planting of trees and shrubs from all over the world has been given as much consideration as the presentation of the animals. The fact that this zoo is so much a part of its natural environment, rather than merely being a big animal park built in the city, is very important. What’s more, although it’s possible to access the island by means of a bridge and come by bus or car, you can also get there by b...Read More

Olympic Stadium

Attraction | "See for Miles from the Helsinki Olympic Tower"

Olympic Stadium Photo, Helsinki, Finland
Quote:
The Olympic Stadium used in the 1952 summer games is situated in the Töölö district of Helsinki, about 2 Kilometres from the centre. It is walkable, of course, but you can also take a tram from the centre which takes only a few minutes. When you see it you might think that the design looks rather dated given that the games were held in Finland in the 1950s but the truth is the stadium was designed and built originally for the 1938 games but they were postponed due to the Second World War. The stadium is still used today for home matches for the Finnish national football team, for athletics events (the first ever World Athletics Championships were held here in 1983) and for pop concerts by ...Read More

Jugend architecture in Helsinki Photo, Helsinki, Finland
Quote:
It might not spring to mind, but for students and enthusiasts of architecture, Helsinki offers much to see and learn from. The city boasts an eclectic mix of styles but the most common and striking must surely be the "Jugend" - or Art Nouveau as it's also known. In Finland the style evolved and was influenced by a piece of literature called the "Kalevala" and this off-shoot of Jugend became known as "national romanticism". Some say that this style was particularly popular in Finland because it create a diversion from the bleak landscapes. One of the most prominent examples of the style is the Helsinki Central Railway Station built in 1914 and designed by Eliel Saarinen. The neig...Read More

We discovered Helsinki Eurohostel by searching a website where you can find hostel and budget accommodation all over Europe and booked through the site. Had we looked for a link directly to the hostel we might have saved some money as the Eurohostel website seems to offer a small discount for booking on line. However, we had made our booking easily and were pleased to find on arrival at the hostel that they were expecting us. From the outside the building appears well maintained though without any character or particular distinguishing features, it may even be purpose built. It is situated about fifteen minutes walk from central Helsinki on an island called Katajanokka that is joined imperce...Read More

Ravintola Konstan Molja appears in all the guides and with good reason. Want to try a selection of traditional Finnish dishes without breaking the bank? Not in Finland for long and want to try lots of different things? This is the place to visit. There is an a la carte menu with main courses starting around 15 Euro but the highlight of this attractive nautical themed restaurant is the evening buffet. For 18 Euro you can start with soup or a selection of hot and cold starters (have soup AND starters if you want!), then fill your plate with some delicious home-cooked Finnish specialities and go back as often as you please. The restaurant is run by a charming husband and wife coupl...Read More

Restaurant | "Ravintola Taj Mahal - A Cheap and Tasty Indian Lunch"

Ravintola Indian Taj, Helsinki Photo, Helsinki, Finland

Situated in Toolo a short walk from both the Olympic Stadium and from the Sibelius Monument, we found this great little Indian restaurant. The interior is bright and colourful with some nice touches like Indian wall hangings. It was spotlessly clean and very comfortable. The service was friendly and prompt - as you would expect at lunchtime; most diners seemed to be regulars - always a good sign.We went for the daily lunch offer at around 7 Euro. This comprised a soup starter, a main course with rice and a salad from the salad bar - the latter was just a green salad but nice to have it included anyway. The main course courry dish had plenty of succulent chicken in it and had a ...Read More

Attraction | "The Sibelius Monument - A Note-able Sight"

Sibelius Monument Photo, Helsinki, Finland
Quote:
This is a two piece monument to Jean Sibelius, Finland's most famous classical composer. He was born in Finland in 1865 and died in 1957. His body lay in state in Helsinki Cathedral and over 17000 people filed past his body to pay their respects. The monument stands in the Sibelius Park (Sibeliuspuisto) in the Töölö district of Helsinki. We walked there from the Olympic Stadium but you may be able to get a bus that way. Ask at Tourist Information. When we were there all the visitors there had stepped off a coach and got a five minute photo opportunity before being herded back on board to the next spot. Try to go early in the day or late afternoon if you want to see this sight without the cr...Read More

We discovered this gem of a shop by chance while strolling in the Kallio district of Helsinki. This shop is crammed from floor to ceiling with wonderful things - mostly colourful Arabia ware, a kitchenware that is still made to this day at a nearby factory but which was especially popular in the 1960s and 70s. The factory opened in 1873 and was orginally owned by a Swedish firm. The wares are colourful and cheerful with simple patterns nd stylised designs. You can see examples of almost every kind of goods the factory made right here in this store. Choosing just one thing to buy will be a nightmare! As well as the ceramic goods there are colourful pots and pans as well as lamp shades, chil...Read More

Attraction | "A Poor Beer Choice at Kola"

Quote:
Hyped up in the guides, we were looking forward to trying this bar. Kola has a reputation of being quite funky and alternative but turned out to be disappointing. The decor is undoubtedly shabby chic; big old leather sofas falling apart, funky 1970s (style) coffee tables, big comfy armchairs. There are some nice art pieces on the wall, many of them for sale I believe although I didn't get the impression that many of the clientele were the art-buying kind. There is a seating area at the front then you go to the bar along a passageway and there you'll find the bar itself with another seating area. We chose to sit here as (even though it was afternoon) the front part was quite nois...Read More
