La Ronda is one of our favorite restaurants in Puerto Vallarta's Romantic Zone. It is on the east less visited side of the neighborhood. It can be difficult to spot. It is just a hole in the wall, sometimes obscured by street stands selling odds and ends. Usually you will find it by seeing the large menu propped outside or, if times are slow, the waiter holding the menu and chit chatting with passersby.Inside, the place is bright, busy and cheerful. Sails describes it as picnic-on-acid décor. There are white wooden folding chairs, bright checkered tablecloths and an unbelievable amount of stuff on the walls. It reminds me of one of those pictures where you try to find the hidden items. The...Read More

Loncheria Las Tres B.B.B.

The budget was tight and appetites large so we headed off to Loncheria Las Tres BBB. This is a small, easy to miss, eatery on the east side of the Romantic Zone. It is on Basilio Badillo, aka restaurant row, but a few blocks past the busy area. It has a small sign and when you look in the entrance it resembles a homes kitchen and living area – probably because it used to be. There are some brick arches, pink walls hung with framed posters of Vallarta, a handful of tables with assorted coverings and the kitchen, completely open to view, along one side. The place is well worn but clean. There are fans overhead that do an almost adequate job of keeping things cool. We chose a table under one ...Read More

Restaurant | "Great Chile Rellenos"

Located n the very edge of Puerto Vallarta’s Romantic Zone, the Red Cabbage Café (El Repollo Rojo) is definitely not a place you would just happen upon. It has managed to stay in business because of its wonderful food. I give directions on how to get here below. It was the low season, with the economy shot and a flu scare; we had no trouble finding parking. We went to the entrance and the waiter let us through the little half door. He seemed shocked to have customers. We chose a table directly under a fan and we were quickly served our drinks. It has been the same waiter forever and even though we only come here a couple of times a year he always seems to remember us.El Repollo ...Read More

Los Arbolitos

Restaurant

Los Arbolitos has been around for many years. It started as a small family run restaurant serving typical Mexican food at very reasonable prices. Somewhere along the way, it became the sweetheart of Americans and Canadians looking for the"real"Mexico. Soon the place was packed (rarely a national face to be seen), the restaurant made larger and the prices soared. Over the last couple of years the madness has died down. Eating here last week with my mother there were only three tables occupied, one by an actual Mexican family! If after all that I have said you wonder why we bother going back, the reason is simple, the food is good, not great, but consistently good. In addition, the view is a pleasant...Read More

Tony’s Please has been around for many years and is now located in the Romantic Zone, east of Insurgentes, the less touristed section of the neighborhood. This particular night we ended up here because I was carless and the restaurant is only a couple of blocks from my mom’s house. It is a very basic place with painted brick walls and a fiberglass panel roof. Inside are simple wooden chairs and tables covered in bright cloths. Fans spin overhead keeping things breezy. It was early for dinner but the place was already hopping. Most of the patrons were from north of the border and although I didn’t take a poll, I would bet they were almost all snowbirds (people who spend their winters here). ...Read More
