12/29/2007 LanzaroteToday we are in port in Lanzarote, Canary Islands. Lanzarote is known as the land of the volcanoes. There are about 300 inactive volcanic cones at various places on this most northeasterly island of the Canary Island chain. Two points of interest about this island are its arid and stark appearance and its commendable constraints on building height and density. UNESCO has declared the entire island to be a Biosphere Reserve. Lanzarote’s Mountains of Fire erupted in 1730 covering the island with volcanic ash that remains today. Camel tours of the dramatic Parque Nacional de Timanfaya reveal a black and red landscape with still smoldering volcanoes. ...Read More
