A Beachy Week in Belize

Overview

We're grad students and we wanted to go somewhere laid back for a budget-minded spring break. Belize is a great place to chill out, do nothing, partake in water activities, read a lot, and have lots of delicious rum and cokes!Quick Tips: DINING: Dining can be expensive on Ambergris Caye, since it is predominantly a tourist destination for middle aged or retired Americans/Canadians. Lots of seafood is also offered, which can be expensive. We recommend having a large breakfast and lunch, and having snacks (like nachos or quesadillas) at a bar with drinks in the evening. We also recommend going to a convenience store (there are several on the island) and picking up some snacks as well for late n...Read More

For Ambergris Caye, i believe this was a pricier hotel, although we didn't pay for it. We were fortunate enough to have someone book our hotel as a gift!We were a little concerned about the location and the place itself, because we had heard that the bungalows looked like prison barracks! However, the bungalows were actually very nice and spacious, with a small kitchenette (microwave, mini fridge, and hot water boiler) and lots of cable channels. We were able to watch the Duke-UNC game!!It is a little bit inconvenient because the hotel is 2.5 miles from the center of town. On the first day, we walked to the center and rented bikes, then rode them around all week ($7/day). It was re...Read More

This was a fun bar to go to. We went on a Sunday, and it is right on the beach. Locals and tourists go there for fruity rum drinks or just the belizean beer. It's pretty laid back and great for drinks outdoors. We saw a rabid racoon there, and that was the biggest thing to happen the entire night!! On weekends, there is live music.

BC's Beach Bar is a great place to watch sports. They have a big screen TV, and the college games were on when were there. It's right on the beach, and there are tons of college tees tacked up all over the palapa. The ambience, truthfully, is no different than the other beach bars, but it's a cool place to get a drink. The nachos are amazing there, and not expensive. As you can tell, we had nachos frequently during our week there!

Bike Riding

Bike ride to the north of the island Photo, Ambergris Caye, Belize

Bike Riding around Ambergris Caye is possibly the best way to get around town. One day, we decided to ride our bikes north to see some of the fancier resorts (like the one in temptation island!). The ride is 2.5 miles to town, and then another 2 miles to the toll bridge. When riding to the bridge, you can go through a neighborhood, where all the locals live (no paved roads, be careful of mud and don't get stuck!), or you can ride along the beach. The toll is about $1, and then you ride over the short bridge. On the other side, to the left is another local neighborhood, and to the right are all the luxury condos that are going up. Be careful, there are aggressive salespeople who will try to stop you an...Read More

Searious Adventures

We took a half day snorkeling tour, run by Searious Adventures. They were the group offered by our hotel. We just signed up with hotel front desk, and the boat came and picked us up at our dock! The group going snorkeling was about 10 people, so it was very manageable. We went to Hol Chan Marine Reserve, and our guide took us around the reserve for about 1 hour. We saw amazing fish and coral and it was a great experience! At first, i was a little afraid, because the water could get very deep, but because we were just floating around, it was very calming and easy going. Then we traveled a few minutes away by boat to the Shark Ray Alley. There were sharks galore! The guide threw out so...Read More

We took a day trip to the Lamanai Wildlife Reserve, just for a change of pace. Of course, we chose the hottest day of the week to go.We did our tour through Searious Adventures. It was very well run, although it was a very long day. At 7am, you are picked up at the dock and you take a 1.5 hour boat ride to the mainland. After that, we get in a van for 45 min (where we witnessed a columbian drug bust on the road!!) to get on another boat and it's another 1.5 hours to the park. The cool part is that breakfast is served on the 1st boat ride, and it is quite good (johnny cakes, fresh fruit). We were also served rum punch and beers if we wanted (why not at 9am?!). during the 2nd leg, we also saw ...Read More

Road Kill Bar

Attraction

Quote:
Road Kill Bar is across the street from Crazy Canucks. We liked this bar because it was all outdoors and right on the street. There was live music the night that we went and it was pretty packed! The music was very Jimmy Buffett-esque, but i think that's how all the bands are that visit and perform in Belize. As mentioned, many of the bars have the same vibe, but it was still a friendly and casual place to have a drink.

Caye Caulker Beaches & Attractions

Originally, we wanted to stay on Caye Caulker. But because of our hotel situation, we couldn't. However, we decided to take a day trip to Caye Caulker, and it was great! We took the water taxi over (about 45min) and then stopped to have lunch. It is much cheaper in Caye Caulker, and much more laid back. There are fewer people on the island as well and the tourists were definitely younger, which is what we liked about it. We didn't do all that much - walked down to the "split" and went swimming for a bit. Then we laid out and read magazines. When we had dried off, we walked down to the other end of the island, observed the hotels and the amazing water, and the cute street dogs. We also saw to...Read More
