The best thing to do is to relax and soak up the local scenes both ashore and afloat. If you like to fish, the game fish of choice is salmon. There is no more beautiful scenery in the world than in the various channels around Vancouver Island. The harbor facilities are world class and the food can be absolutely first class! The nicest part of the trip was in getting to know the people of British Columbia. There are many Americans that own boats that go there for the summer and everyone encountered was as helpful and friendly as could be. There is no better combination of history, nature, night life, good food, and hospitality to be found. If you want a real break, go to Victoria and rent a boat...Read More

Our traveling companions from Atlanta arrived in Victoria two days before we did. They were lucky enough to have chosen the Ocean Pointe Resort, The accomodations were superb and the service was a cut above. Their stay was enhanced by the location of the resort on Victoria''s harbor. We ate lunch with them there, and it was very good and reasonably priced. We were impressed by the flowers, the health spa, and the enclosed glass swimming pool. This was one of three "resort" places that our friends stayed in and was the best of the lot. You can eat on a veranda overlooking the harbor and watch the harbor ferries and sea planes take off and land to your heart''s content. If I ever am lucky enough to...Read More

The price for a slip in the harbor? $56.00 a night. Its what you get for the $56.00 a night that is important. As with every marina we stayed at, the facilities were clean, servicable, and more than adequate. It was the hospitality, that, and the sheer size of the other boats that impressed. Not only were we tied up in the center of one of the most alive cities in the world--we were next to a 165 foot Fead Ship. It was awesome--the most impressive boat show in the water I have ever seen. The average boat was about 45 feet, yet our proud spiffy little Camano, felt right at home. Since you are charged according to the size of your boat you might think that because we had one of the smallest boat...Read More

This restaurant is the most appealing looking eatery I have ever seen! It is a rustic jewel set in a forest fairy land. It is just a few meters north of the marina at Canoe Cove and has a paved parking lot surrounded by flowers and majestic fir trees. When I first saw it, I was completely blown away. It was a combination of a gingerbread house and a picturesque Swiss chalet all in one. The owners are a young energetic couple who know how to make a patron feel at home. It is a true family venture with a younger sister and mother very much in evidence. Tine Jorgensen is the young wife and Leonard is the culinary arts graduate chef. The restaurant specializes in steak, salmon, lamb, and ex...Read More

Salt Springs Island was where we spent our first night of the charter. The place we stayed was the Ganges Harbor Marina. It was under new management and they had done everything possible to make things as comfortable as possible for Marina guests. The staff was very helpful in helping us tie-up, castoff, and re-fuel. All of the facilities were brand new and the marina was right in the heart of the town. There were several good restaurants and as always the other boat crews made us feel right at home. To get there we went to the edge of the Georgia Strait out of Bedwell Harbor and turned North until we came to the place known as "Active Pawssage" between Galliano and Mayne Islands. I think the sce...Read More

Bedwell Harbor was the first time we stopped to eat ashore before heading on to Salt Springs Island for our first night's sleep. It was a charming marina with a walking path to the top where you could stretch your legs or you could rent scooters by the hour or the half day. As always we saw sea planes coming and going but the marina was certainly smaller than the one we left behind in Sydney. At the top of the hill was the absolutely charming resort section of the marina. We looked in the rooms and they were fine. There was a heated pool and a full service restaurant. At the bottom of the hill pub food was available and that's where we ate. As usual the food was good and reasonably priced. ...Read More

Where to Charter Your Boat

Based on my research, the best deal for chartering a boat was from the Gulf Islands Crusing School Ltd. The business is run from 2300 Canoe Cove Road and is only a stone's throw from the BC Ferry Terminal. Victoria Airport is only six miles away. The marina is well equipped and the charter company is owned and operated by Fran and Bruce Stott. His able assistant is named Elvi and these three pleasant people make it as painless as possible to charter a boat. They have power boats and sailing vessels in their inventory and do an excellent job of making sure you are comfortable and capable of operating their boats before you take off on your charter. The prices are to be found on their web site at . ...Read More

Victoria is the principal city of Vancouver Island. It is a sparkling gem in the summer. It boasts historical sites, museums, grand hotels, a bustling harbor, a China Town, and some of the most beautiful vistas on the west coast of the North American hemisphere. There are fabulous opportunities to eat at reasonable prices, and the outdoor air is unbeatable. On a sunny day the place takes on a magical aura. The water sparkles and the people seem sincerely glad to have you there. There is something of a night life, fishing galore, outdoor activities, and a totally clean environment. The flower baskets hanging from the street lights are everywhere. The place looks like a movie set but it is a real...Read More
