The Chic and Freak in Los Angeles

A June 2001 trip to Hollywood by gsingh

Quote: I drove 95 miles per hour down highway 5 from San Jose to Los Angeles for a wonderful stay at the Buky House Bed & Breakfast in the ritzy neighborhood of Hancock Park. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the Girly Freak Show, featuring Slymenstra Hymen and the Torture King, was in town. So I shot over to Hollywood and got my fill of trapeze acts, fire-eating, contortionism and human dartboards.

The Chic and Freak in Los Angeles Best of IgoUgo

Overview

Quote:
I wholeheartedly recommend a stay at the Buky House Bed & Breakfast in ritzy Hancock Park, where private security teams patrol the neighborhood. It is a wonderful place and the owner is more than happy to strike a deal for extended stays. Many memorable moments were also to be had at the Girly Freak Show, including the Torture King shoving 12-inch needles through his face and biceps, as well as the scantily clad Reina Terror getting darts thrown into her back. Side-splitting entertainment, Hollywood style.Quick Tips: If you park on the street anywhere near the Sunset Strip, you better be careful...Best Way To Get Around: If you are traveling to Los Angeles and stay f...Read More

The Buky House Bed & Breakfast is owned by Gail Buky (pronounced bucky) and is a wonderful and centrally located place in Los Angeles. Located in the prestigious Hancock Park neighborhood near La Brea and Third Ave., the house is 15 minutes from the Convention Center, 10 minutes from Universal Studios, 30 minutes from Disneyland or the beach. And of course, there's Hollywood not too far away. There are actually two apartments here, one upstairs and one downstairs, but they comprise the same building. Each has three rooms and they can be rented out for any length of time. She''ll even cut you a deal if you stay for a long time. I stayed upstairs, where I found a huge kitchen with al...Read More

Key Club Best of IgoUgo

Attraction | "The Key Club"

Quote:
The Key Club is interesting for one reason alone: it's the last club on the Sunset Strip before Sunset Blvd turns and heads into Beverly Hills. So people stop in solely for that reason. Go figure. The pseudo-steel plate metal facade of the place gives it an industrial image, but once you get inside it's basically like any other club. The place is tri-level with a kitchen, a dance floor, all black interior, and hideously overpriced drinks. One bottle of Heineken: $6. Welcome to Hollywood. I immediately felt like going back to Crete where I can get a beer for a dollar. Of all the bathrooms that I have visited in my l...Read More

Boardners Best of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Boardner's"

Quote:
This great bar is located just south of Hollywood Blvd on Cherokee and calls itself Hollywood's best kept little secret, which pretty much sums it up. 1930s decor, vinyl booths, an outside patio, chic lamps and chandeliers, and several twisted nightly DJs make it a great place to hang out. A huge variety of people frequent the place and there's a great patio outside. Connected to Boardner's via the back patio is another bar next door where on Saturdays you'll find Bar Sinister, an impressive weekly gothic/techno/dark wave/fetish hangout. On this particular Saturday in question--June 30th--there was a special event taking over the whole venue called "A Night of Illvision." Belly dancers, fire bre...Read More

Slymenstra Hymen Photo - Hollywood, California
Quote:
A long time ago--long before rock 'n' roll--there existed the phenomenon of the circus-side show. Traveling freak shows crisscrossed the countryside showcasing all sorts of peculiar acts and bizarre human oddities. Somewhere in the course of inhuman events, the sideshow disappeared from mainstream culture until Jim Rose came along in the early 1990's and revived the idea. He put the feelers out, scoured the bowels of society and put together his own assemblage of freaks. After a few years of touring to excess, his conglomeration of freaks wound up as a main act on the Lollapalooza tour. Nowadays we live in a time of overdone epic sagas filled with ridiculous, in-your-face, eye-candy special e...Read More

Last, but certainly not least, here you see two more shots of the human dartboard and two more shots of the wonderful trapeze act from the girls with the name I can't remember. It was something like "Oohlah."
Parking sign off Sunset Blvd Photo - Hollywood, California
Quote:
There is a massive parking problem near the Sunset Strip, as people want to find somewhere to leave their cars while they go get clobbered all night. As a result, you can't park on the streets immediately surrounding the area. These streets lead up into the Hollywood hills to the north and into the community of Beverly Hills to the west, so the areas are all classified as "parking permit zones." If you're not a resident, you can't park there. Everywhere you look, there are signs that say, "No overnight parking" or "You are now entering a parking permit zone." (See the photo). Since I didn't want to pay the prices at the parking garage, I found a legal space on Doheny near Santa Monica ...Read More
