I have vacationed in the Kohala area for decades, as my parents own a secondhome there.

What I did on my family vacation, with my hubby and 3 kids in a spectacular place with wonderful natural environment. Children, ages 5,8 and 10 delighted in going on a deep sea fishing trip in Kawaihai harbor. We stayed close to home many days and snorkeled and boogie boarded at the beach. The vacation home we have has its own jacuzzi and pool so it was sometimes hard to make ourselves go exploring. Every year we visit the dolphins at the Hilton waikoloa and have lunch at the spot just next to the lagoon where all the dolphine programs occur.

Quick Tips:

A visit to the Hualalai is necessary as it is the latest in indulgence. Dinner in the casual restaurant just next to the pool and the beach is perfect for large families. Driving up to Hawi and hiking down into Pololu is also fantastic, only 40 minutes from our home. It is a steep descent to a black sand beach with a dangerous riptide. Years ago we saw wild boar and this year we saw a crazy surfer dude attack the waves solo. He did land in one piece but what a daredevil

Best Way To Get Around:

After our long journey from the snow-covered East Coast, we long for open air and have often rented a convertible. 3 kids later and we get the minivan. It takes us everywhere we need to be, to the hotel next door for am yoga on the beach, swimming in the hotel pool and to the all important general store in Puako
