London Life

A travel journal to London by PaulH

London Life

Overview

Quote:
Thames river cruises from Greenwich, wander around the Canary Wharf area, do all the tourist sights, lie in the sun in Hyde Park. Go on the British Airways London Eye - it's a great way of orientating yourself as you can see all the major sites of Central London.

Quick Tips:

Best Way To Get Around:

The Tube. When it works, there's nothing like it. When it doesn't, well... Get a day pass (currently £4.10 off-peak for all the central London stations) which pays for itself if you use the tube more than twice.

The Tower Hotel Guoman

Hotel | "Thistle Tower"

The whole Thistle chain is fairly similar - fantastic! I stayed here early this year when down in London for interview, and I was suitably overwhelmed by the immense super-king-size bed, three telephones in the room and the unrivaled view of Tower Bridge at night.

The breakfast was a self-service buffet and the excellent standards of service followed through here. All the food was great, with a vast choice (five types of eggs, thousands of fruit juices...!). I even earned 750 BA Miles for the one night''s stay.

If you need a bit of luxury, try the Thistle Tower!

Baden-Powell House

Best Of IgoUgo

Hotel

Quote:
Being a Scout in my youth, and now a Scout Leader, i''ve stayed at Baden-Powell house many times, and not been disappointed. Please note that the hostel is not restricted to members of the Scout Movement only! Since its complete renovation in 1997, the facilites are excellent and modern. Rooms range from two beds to about twelve-bed dormitories, from my recollection. The breakfasts are of a high standard and come included with the price of a room. The restaurant also provides lunch and dinner service. BP house provides an affordable place to stay in one of the most desireable parts of London. 5/10 minutes walk from the V&A museum, Natural History museum and Science mu...Read More

Planet Hollywood

Restaurant

Quote:
The London branch of this global star-studded restaurant chain carries on the Planet Hollywood tradition of reasonable food at a huge price. The charismatic cocktail waiters and the crazy movie memorabilia all over the walls are the best things about this particular eatery.

For some bizarre reason, it's as popular as all the others that I've visited around the world. Then again, I keep going back - it's just a unique "eating experience". I recommend spending the whole night there if you go. Reserve, turn up early and have cocktails at the bar, then take your time over dinner with a few bottles of wine.

Party in the Park

Attraction

Quote:
Organised by the radio station Capital FM in association with Prince Charles' charity "The Princes' Trust", this musical extravaganza is not to be missed at any cost!

You've got to fight to get tickets as they usually sell out literally hours after the kiosks open. We paid £20 each for ours this year, but it was worth it. Ricky Martin, Lulu, Tom Jones... the list goes on and on. The weather can be a bit tempermental, but otherwise a fantastic way to spend a Sunday.

Canada Place Mall

Attraction

Quote:
Canada Place Mall is a fairly large mall in the Docklands business district, some of it beneath the Canary Wharf Tower. It has several speciality jewelers and clothing outlets catering to the well paid executives who work in and around the Wharf, thus is the place to go to find quality, if it is at a price. Although not a rival to Oxford Street, and lacking in department stores, its shops and boutiques are less busy, especially on the weekend, than those of Central London. There is also a plethora of places to buy lunch, courtesy of the thousands of office workers who escape every lunchtime into the mall! Worth a visit for window shopping, and to wander around the Canary ...Read More

Provided you don't have to wait too long, it's a great way to spend half an hour. Try and book timed tickets in advance to avoid the wait.
