Overview

Quote:
Vieques is a small island off of the coast of mainland Puerto Rico and is probably the coolest island I have ever had the pleasure to go to. But it wasn’t always an amazing serene island paradise. After years of Spanish ruling, the United States bought two thirds of the island during World War II as a save haven for British ships in case the Nazis took control of Britain. Although it was never implemented, the island remained controlled by the US Navy and was used as a bombing site for many decades. In 1999, a local Vieques man was out trying to stop and warn people about the testing’s when he was killed by a stray bomb. Since then, local Viequeans protested the Navy and after years of fighting, ...Read More

I have never in my life stayed at such a place as Vista Dos Mares (http://www.vistadosmares.com/) and I loved every second of it. A couple of months back, my parents, as a holiday gift to the family, rented a quaint little villa on the island of Vieques and asked if my brothers and their respective opposite halves and myself and my girlfriend would like to accompany them. I jumped at the chance to head down there and escape New York for a little while. After a smooth ride into Vieques on an Air America charter flight, and renting a car Martineau Car Rental, we got to Vista Dos Mares (The View of Two Seas). I was so excited, but had failed to check the website to see the full effect of...Read More

Bioluminescent Bay at Vieques Island

Attraction

After being on Vieques for a couple of days, I kept hearing about this Bio Bay and how it was a must do. The real name is the Bioluminescent Bay, but is referred to by all as the Bio Bay and is a huge tourist hotspot. My brother and sister-in-law went on a tour with kayaks through the bay, but the rest of us went on the Island Adventures tour (http://www.biobay.com/). We had to drive up through Isabelle Segunda to the far part of town to get to this office. When we entered, we were all told to just hang out in this painted room with pictures of small creatures and an artistic depiction of the bay we were heading out to. Then we were told that we could head into the office and pay o...Read More

A Breakdown of the Beaches of Vieques

Best Of IgoUgo

Attraction

Quote:
Vieques is an amazing island filled with dozens of beaches that are all amazing in their own special way. Although I didn’t have the chance to get to them all, here is a little break down of each beach that I made it to.Grande Beach – This beach is located on the outskirts of the restricted area and is a total bitch to get to, with the pothole filled back roads. When we finally got there, we parked in one of the alcoves and started walking up to shoreline. Here, the sand was extremely coarse, so beware and wear your sandals. What was amazing about this beach in particular was the massive amounts of beach glass. From end to end, this place is covered in shells and beach glass. ...Read More

El Sombrero Viejo

Best Of IgoUgo

Attraction

Quote:
On our first evening in Vieques, we all realized that we were in dire need of alcoholic beverages and mixers, but had no idea where to go. We drove into Isabelle Segunda to find a place that sold alcohol and came across a place called El Sombrero Viejo. Upon entering, we ran into a bunch of transported locals who were just hanging out, drinking into the late afternoon. This seemed like the right place for us and we were proven correct upon entering. One half of this old bar was a full service bar, while the other was complete with scores of bottles for sell and a large Parrot watching the inventory. The woman behind the bar was extremely helpful with everything we needed and gave us ...Read More
