Bar Barcelona

Restaurant

Note, Bar Barcelona is now closed down and replaced by a wine bar. Although the name of the restaurant makes me sound like I have a minor speech impediment, Bar Barcelona in Lindley, Huddersfield is one of my favourite "anytime" restaurants. While Bar Barcelona lingers slightly towards the "pile it high, sell it cheap" end of the restaurant experience, I find the place friendly, reasonable quality, good value and above all, relaxing. It’s a good place to go to chill and enjoy a chat with friends. It's also a good place for families with well behaved children. If I wanted to impress someone, I’d probably go elsewhere. As you might expect from the name, Bar Barcel...Read More

I don’t think anyone could claim a meal at the Black Bull forms a perfect eating experience. However, if you can’t be bothered to crank up your microwave at home, the Black Bull have a whole menu of microwave ready meals available. At least the Black Bull doesn’t pretend to be snobby. It is a public house first, restaurant second. On weekdays, they offer a special deal of two main courses for £7. A reasonable bottle of wine costs around £9, meaning a couple can eat a filling meal and feel mellow on alcohol for just £8 per person. No wonder the place has a busy and loyal clientele. For those into their beer, the Black Bull sells reasonably kept Timothy Taylor’s Landlord, along with ...Read More

Pu ja thai

Considering Huddersfield’s Pu Ja Thai has been open less than a month, it has already built up a considerable reputation. We arrived early on Saturday evening, and while able to get a table, we snaffled one of the last unreserved spaces. So, is this early success justified? From my experience, the answer is "very much so". Pu Ja Thai is in a tastefully converted house on the main road in Lindley near the hospital (handy if the birds eye chillies get to you!). We were sitting upstairs on the balcony, with a view onto the bar below. This open arrangement makes the restaurant a little chilly (don’t worry, the spicy food soon warms you through). The restaurant is very tastefu...Read More

The Rose and Crown

One of my favourite Huddersfield places to dine is at the Rose and Crown in Cop Hill in Slaithwaite. I love the “getting there” just as much as the meal at the end. The pub is perched on the top of Cop Hill, surrounded by moors and farmland. In the summer, a seat outside on one of the benches is wonderful. There is always a bit of a breeze, and I can spend hours just staring at the view across the moors. If you walk to the Rose and Crown, you will get a marvellous sense of achievement as you wind your way through steep footpath and narrow road. If you drive, you have a marvellous sense of smugness, as you know you didn’t have to walk up the hill to get here… Either way, the views a...Read More

A General Tour around Huddersfield

I’m always a little surprised when the coach tours stop off at Huddersfield. On the face of it, there’s very little for the tourist to see in the town itself. It’s only on reflection, do I realise Huddersfield is at the centre of a number of interesting attractions. Huddersfield Town CentreHuddersfield is a big town; in fact, with a population of around 145,000 people, some guidebooks describe the place as the largest town in Europe. I’m not sure if it’s true, but it sounds good. The best thing to do in Huddersfield is to hold your head aloft. Most of the beauty of the town comes with its grand stone buildings. Lift your head about the standard shop fronts, and you will r...Read More
