Hapuna Beach

Kona is such a big island you would think there are plenty of beaches. However, many of the beaches are lava rock and not easy to access. Hapuna beach is one of the nice white sand beaches along the Kona Coast.
Great for boogie boarding and body surfing. Waves get a little large for smaller children in the afternoon. Showers are available as well as a public restroom and picnic area. Not good for snorkeling and the parking is not that great. But...the beach is worth it!

Punalu'u - Black Sand Beach

Located between Volcano and Na'alehu on the southern portion of the Big Island of Hawaii. This is a site to see. Gorgeous black sand beach. I had never seen this before and was taken back by the beauty. The beach has a little "Shack" where you can buy sunscreen and trinkets. The bathrooms are not easy to get to. The beach is full of rough rocks so do wear your water shoes. Black Sand Beach Bonus...Sea Turtles! But you must stay more than 20 feet away from them as they are protected. And take your snorkel gear because it the turtles are not up on the beach, they will be in the water!
