Hawi, Hawaii, is an unlikely place to encounter authentic German cuisine, but Aunty's Place is just this sort of place. A bit dilapidated inside and out, the combination bar and restaurant reminds of the German style pubs (Gasthaus or Gasthof or Gaststaette) that serve essentially homemade foods in an informal setting. The combination of drinking bar and food service is also typically German, if not European, no Puritanical traditions interfering with the enjoyment of food and (volatile) drink.
The place could certainly be cleaner, but I fear that too much polish would wreck the earthiness of the setting for what is the equivalent of French Bistro food: hearty, traditonal German meals without concern for calories or fads.
The proprietress hails from Southern Germany, where pub food is most firmly entrenched. Married to a GI who happens to come from Hawi, the couple settled here after the husband's retirement.
Not only the food is authentic, but Gerda's gruff German charm makes you forget that you are in Hawaii for just a little while: it's a vacation within a vacation!
