We did Key West as-cheep-as-you-can but had a great time. The atmosphere of the whole island is diverse and perfect for any mood.

Sigsby Naval base

If you have the ability to access military base facilities there is no better place to stay while in Key West for the money.
While there is a hotel at Sigsby we camped for only $8 a night. There are several hundred campsites and numerous RV sites some with electric some without.
There are very nice shower/bathroom facilities that are not far from any of the sights. There is a pool, you can walk out onto a tarmac out to the Gulf, pets are welcome, and best of all you get the occasional treat of a coast guard ship coming in after a bust, a helicopter landing or people doing practice jumps out of it.
You can easily walk to Duval Street from here, and you also have the ease of using the BX, Shoppette, gas station, and other standard stores so you wont have to pay tourist prices for necessities or meals if you don't want to. And in the event it is raining try to nightly Bingo tournament at the MWR club. The club has a tropical atmosphere and people really get into their bingo.

Conch Fritters at Mallory Square

My husband, quite the traveler could not believe that I had never tried a conch fritter, much less that I had never even heard of them. So when we got to Key West his first mission was to get me one and as opposed to trying to locate a restaurant that had them we went right to one of the many hot dog stand style carts at Mallory Square.
So now I am addicted to the conch fritters, kind of a large hush puppy with conch meat if you've never had one. This is a great place to try them out as the price is great and there is much less of a crowd than at a sit down place. Not to mention that you will never get the atmosphere in a restaurant that you will sitting at Mallory Square with your fist full of food!

Rick's

By far our most frequented place while here. We came at the end of bike week and the beginning of spring break so there was something new happening here every night. One night was $10 all you can drink till midnight, and keep your cup, Another night was a wet t-shirt contest. This place was packed but if you can go to the top floor and grab a spot either at the railing next to the bar (this is the best view of the stage for events) or at the outside balcony. The balcony overlooks Duval Street and during spring break it is like New Orleans with people throwing beads etc. There is great people watching on the balcony.Ricks is partially an open air bar so in bad weather this may not be the place to go, we did not have bad weather so I am not sure how they work that. The place was packed every time we were there and had high energy level. Rick's did a great job of keeping the energy high all the time varying from contests, events, and just plain old music and dancing.

Sunset at Mallory Square

My husband and I are not really sit and watch the sunset people but his father insisted we go check it out so we did. Before the sunset the whole square is a mini circus. Performers gather and will give you everything from a dog on a tight rope to the traditional robot mannequin. All of course expect tips for their skills but for the change in your pocket you can get a wide variety of entertainment. As for the sunset it gets crowded around the edge, so much so that if you want a picture you either should find your place more than an hour ahead of time or resort to holding your camera in the air and snapping away. Given the crowd this is not the place for a romantic sunset this is a check the box I've seen it kind of spot. Try going by the cruise ships or on a sunset cruise if you want a better view or less people.I found it a bit anti climatic but like I said I am not a sunset person.
