This region is touted as being world-class for surfer dudes and dudettes, so the water is the place to be. Me? I'm more the laid-back, sailing type so I enjoyed a tour via a seasoned captain who knew his way around the coast.

Quick Tips:

This is a tropical find for those tired of crowded, touristy places and are looking for something a little different. There's alot of poverty in nearby Mayaguez, so if you wander, be sensitive and aware at all times.

Best Way To Get Around:

Hire a tour guide--you'll learn more than by renting a car and you'll be infusing the economy as well. It's the right thing to do. (That, and eating oatmeal everyday.)

This is probably the finest privately owned hotel/resort in all of Puerto Rico. The site encompasses gorgeous suites and villas with hand-crafted mahogany furnishings (the beds are fairy-tale-like), marble and red clay tiles, rich tapestries and wooden louvered doors that open on ocean-front balconies. The only downside I found was lack of a real shower, but that's worth the price you'll pay to stay at this incredibly charming resort. A huge swimming pool will entice even those reluctant to stick a toe in. It's the kind of pool I envisioned Esther Williams in!

This is the most elegant restaurant I've experienced, in a white glove, servant-behind-each-diner-kind of way. It was almost giggle-worthy because the waitstaff was so intent on getting everything just right and when something went crashing in the kitchen, it seemed so perfectly timed, and defused all the tension exuding from the new waiters. The food was presented to each of us, with a silver cover on top and simultaneously, each one was removed at the same time with a 5-star flourish. To give you an idea of how classy I am: I burst out laughing because it struck me as so 'Upstairs/Downstairs,' and I felt like the chambermaid. We set out on this beautiful boat, helmed by the Battistini father-son duo, and had a wonderful day spent cruising the coastline, enjoying the personal, guided tour which detailed historical background and local gossip. The Horned Dorset provided a scrumptious lunch on board, served by hosts from the hotel and this was heaven on water for me and the others who joined us. There was opportunity for fishing but we had too much fun schmoozing and eating (and drinking) to worry abut fishing.

Being a guest at the Horned Dorset was like being inside a Hans Christian Andersen fairy-tale. There were tropical flowers, friendly staff and beautiful accomodations. Best of all, if you didn't want to socialize, you were left alone and your privacy was always respected. This is the kind of resort to get away from civilization, hang out, read, think, swim and just be. No television, no phone, no radio, just good company, great books (in the library) and wonderful hosts.
