A September 2007 trip to Tulum by Captain Canuck

Tulum is one of my favorite places to visit. Great diving and lots of different hotels. Beautiful beach too!

We stayed this time at Dreams Tulum for a week.

We mostly went down this time for a diving trip, we have been down to this area before several times with the kids and this was our chance to do some diving for a change. The resort was a pleasant surprise. We usually stay at small hotels and do our own thing. We may be converted to all-inclusive now! Our room was nice, well the first one had a bad smell but it was near some mangroves and they said it was because of the rain. Fair enough, so they moved us to another one and even upgraded us to a Jr. Suite. There wasn't much difference from the first one, except for the smell of course. Anyway the room and the food were great.

We had steak at the beach restaurant one night, which was really tasty, the service was a bit slow but the staff was very nice. We even took advantage of the 24-hour room service a couple of times and even that was good.

As I said, we went mostly to dive and I guess we lucked out. The dive shop in the hotel, Maya Diving were really top notch. Their shop was a bit worse for wear, they told me they hadn't repaired it since hurricane Dean a month or so before. We did ten dives altogether. Six reef dives and 4 cenote (cavern) dives. The reefs were a bit beat up from the hurricane but there were plenty of fish and lots of corals and other critters to see. They didn't limit us on our bottom time and we had some nice long dives. We had three different Dive Masters and each one was great, they take their time and make you feel really comfortable. Ok, so it was low season and we were the only ones on the boat half the time but still, the service was great, we never had to touch our gear except to dive after our first dive.

The best part though was the cenote diving. We had never tried one before and sort of thought it would be dark and gloomy but boy, were we ever wrong. We went first to Dos Ojos and the first dive was so bright and blue and the water was so clear I just couldn't believe it. It was like a dream, it still seems that way. The second dive in the Bat Cave was much darker but really pretty. The next day we went to Calavera or Temple of Doom. This one had a halocline which was really weird. We ended it all with Gran Cenote which was kind of similar to Dos Ojos. Really blue and pretty. Too bad we had to fly home the next day.

Two thumbs up! Don't forget to visit Dreams Resort while your diving with Maya Diving.
