Hiking, white water rafting, swimming and all things outdoors is what Stanley is all about. From our entrance into the little town we were filled with awe. I couldn't believe we just happened upon this place at the tail end of our vacation. I would have liked to spend the whole week there! We sat in an outdoor swing made for adults situated on the river's edge. It looked over a verdant green pasture on the opposite side of the river. I knew from the morning that returning to Stanley wasn't just an option, it was a must!Quick Tips: Book a room in advance, there are only a few hotels and they book up early, especially in the summertime.Best Way To Get Around: You'll need a car to explo...Read More

The motel is comprised of individual cottages constructed of cement block, painted white with red roofs. Ours was roomy, spotlessly clean, and consisted of a queen bed, built-in wall desk/vanity, bathroom with shower, miniature older black and white TV. The linens on the bed were wonderful, all cotton sheets and a vintage mattelase bedspread. Original photographs of the area adorned the walls. It was quiet, romantic and one of the least expensive of the motels in Stanley. The staff was friendly and helpful.

We didn''t stay here, but heard about this place and asked for a tour. Partners, Becky Hammons and Hilda Floyd, were friendly and glad to accommodate our desire. Each of the 12 rooms are decor-themed and filled with precious antiques and wonderful furniture. Each room has its own private bath. It is a unique inn built of rustic logs about 50 years ago. They serve both breakfast and dinner. One of the guests mentioned to us that the food was excellent.

The lodge-style dining room of this restaurant/bar was at once charming and comfortable. Constructed of pine logs, it gives the feel of being in a log home. The food was freshly prepared and excellent. We dined here both nights of our stay in Stanley. The menu is varied with locally caught salmon, steaks, huge salads and baked potatoes. I don't, however, recommend their key lime pie for dessert.

This bakery/cafe is a new and welcome addition to Stanley. Their coffee and food are delicious. Servings are plentiful and fairly priced. They are open early for breakfast and also for lunch. They'll pack a picnic lunch for backpackers. The menu includes salads, stromboli, wraps and burritos and sandwiches. The also have incredible pastries, pies and milkshakes. Beer and wine are served too. The strawberry shortcake with fresh strawberries and real whipped cream was to die for!

In a word: Incredible! In my humble opinion, this is one of the most beautiful areas in the United States. Established by Congress in 1972 it is managed by the U.S. Forest Service. The SNRA is pristine, with rugged nature and spectacular beauty. The mighty Salmon River flows through Stanley, it originates in the Sawtooth Mountains. The mountains themselves are awesome, with aretes and matterhorns that change color with the sun and clouds. They are filled with alpine lakes, wildlife and foliage. When we visited the area was literally bursting with hundreds of wildflowers including lavender, lupine and several species of Indian Paintbrush.
