A week in the Bay Area

A June 2001 trip to San Francisco by D & M

This journal sites "must-see" sights of the San Francisco/Napa area over a 6 day period. It was our most fun trip yet! Great trip for couples!

Muir Woods (beautiful and QUICK...about 30 min.), NIGHT Alcatraz Tour, Moose's Resturant, China Town (don't stay too long-not much to see), Coit Tower, Drive past Lombard Street, Fisherman's Wharf, Napa "Must Visit" Vineyards:Jarvis (expensive, but cool), Silverado (FREE & very generous), Pine Ridge (taste wine as it ferments...right out of the barrel), Niebaum-Coppola(skip the tour), look at movie relics for free, get a massage and relax!

Quick Tips:

Priceline.com has great deals for Napa. There are no "bad" places to stay. We stayed at the Napa Marriott for /night from priceline...it runs for , one of the cheaper places to stay in Napa!

Best Way To Get Around:

In Napa, you must rent a car. In San Francisco, part of the charm is taking the trolly. But the town is VERY hilly, so you can't do a whole lot of walking unless you are in MUCH better shape that we are! City tours will take you to all of the high lights, so if youmust save a few bucks, dont get a car in San Francisco.

The food was awesome! It was a little pricy, but everything is in Napa! It is out-of-the-way, unless you are staying in St.Helena. We just loved it. It was quiet, the service was excellent and on Tuesday nights the chef prepares appetizers for each table...on the house!

We had read the French Laundry was THE place to eat in Napa, but it is SO hard to get to, that it is nearly impossible to even get them to answer their phone! So, we took what we were told was second-best, Bouchon. It was very expensive. We paid $60 for their least expensive bottle of wine. The food was fair, and when we left (After eating appetizers, entree, AND dessert) we were still hungry due to meagar portions. French Laundry IS much more expensive, and hopefully the food is better! At least it was VERY NOISY!

This is a nice place for a ladies brunch. The view is nice. It is a little over priced for what you get. My husband loved the bloody Mary's, but the brunch/luncheon menu does not please a starving man! Since the view is nice and the drinks are strong, it is a nice place to unwind after sight seeing...or get a jump start on your day.

You wouldn't walk here for exercise. It is a beautiful forest of giant 2000 year old Red Woods preserved by Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Attraction

These are beautiful 2000 year old giant Red Woods. The area is relatively small, but the drive from San Francisco is short and well worth it. This is a quick trip. You only need to allow about 1 hour to tour the woods and hear from the guides.
