Antwerpen is Rubens, Van Dijck, Jordaens, Bruegel, Plantijn, but also 1000 years old architecture, 5 centuries of music and art handicrafts. And also for the tourist who loves good food and drinks this is the place to be. Antwerpen is still a little bit of Breugel, a bit of Burgundy. Describing the highlights isn't easy, there are too many, but if you visit Antwerpen you should not miss The Our Lady cathedral, the Grand Market, Het steen, drink a "bolleke koninck" at one of the many terraces. Quick Tips: The inhabitants of Antwerpen are hospitable and tolerant, that's why when you visit Antwerpen as a "tourist", you'll feel at home in no time.Best Way To Get Around:...Read More

The food was delicious, but at the end of the meal I had a bad experience. After I asked for the bill, I gave the waiter a 2000 BEF bill, and a few moments later he came back with the change, I checked it and noticed that he had given change on a 1000 BEF note, so I went inside and I told him that he made a mistake, well he wasn`t surprised at all, without saying anything he gave me another 1000 bef bill back, what was prove to me that he had the intention of cheating on me. I believe it was very stupid to try to do that with someone of the proper country, maybe he is used to do this with foreigners, then he has more luck as they do not know the size, color of the different banknotes. So maybe this re...Read More

Steen (Het) Photo, Antwerp, Belgium

Het Steen : This is the oldest still existing building in Antwerpen (ca 1200). In fact these are the remains of a much bigger fortress, that was built to protect the walled inner city. It was also the house of the Burgrave. The cross opposite the entry recalls the time that Het Steen was used as a prison. In front of this Cross the convicts who were sentenced to death made their last prayer. Nowadays Het Steen is used as a museum. Here is located the National Maritime Museum. It contains a beautiful collection of old and not so old ship models, paintings, pictures, maritime utensil, ship parts, instruments and decorations. At the right side of Het Steen you see some ships lying on dry land, thi...Read More

City Hall, Built from 1561 - 1564 A lot of City Halls in Flanders aren`t used any more, most of them are only used as monumental decoration or as museum. In Antwerpen, the city hall is still used for the reason that it was built so many years ago: the administrative centre of the city. It is also possible to visit this City Hall, Points of interest are the stairs and the 19th century furnishing. This City Hall still radiates the pride and glory of Antwerpen`s Golden Century. It is built in Renaissance style, based on Gothic style. At the left side of City Hall you see the statue `The buideldrager` (The Bag Carrier), on this statue you can read `Arbeid Vrijheid` (...Read More

Grote Markt

Attraction | "Grand Market square"

Grote Markt Photo, Antwerp, Belgium

You must have seen the Grote Markt (Grand Market square). Certainly this must be the most photographed tourist spot in Antwerpen, but it fulfils a very important social role in the life of the "Sinjoren". The "Sinjoor" comes here for several festivities. He comes here to drink some beers, sometimes after a wedding ceremony, it is always busy over here, in brief this is his "village-green". The triangle shape of the Grote Markt points out the Frankish roots of this square. This square is surrounded by Guild houses from the 16th and 17th century. These guild houses have richly decorated stepped gables which are richly decorated with graceful pinnacles. Even t...Read More

The statue of Brabo in front of the City Hall. There is a mythological saga that tells that in the beginning of chronology, the curb in the Schelde river was dominated by the giant Druoon Antigoon, who claimed a heavy toll of all passing ships. The ones who refused to pay, well their hand was cut off. This ended when a Roman soldier Silvius Brabo killed the giant, he did cut off his hand and threw it into the Schelde river. From that moment this place was called Handwerpen (werpen = throwing). After sometime, the "H" disappeared and the name Antwerpen was born. This is one of the stories about the name of this wonderful city. The statue of this legendary liberator can be seen on the Grand Market p...Read More

Onze Lieve Vrouw Kathedraal

Attraction | "Catherdral of Our Lady"

Onze Lieve Vrouw Kathedraal Photo, Antwerp, Belgium
Quote:
Visit the Cathedral of Our Lady (Onze Lieve Vrouw kathedraal). The cathedral of Our Lady dominates the Antwerp skyline with its 123-m high tower. Originally there was even planned a second tower. But there was a fire in 1521, and there was so much money needed to restore the building, that there was no more money left for the second tower. Through the years the Cathedral has been destroyed many times: by fire, by the iconoclastic fury, by the French occupation, . . . This monumental building shows the wealth of the ancient Antwerp. The style of the Cathedral changed many times through the years, from Renaissance to Baroque, to Rococo, to Classicism. The magnificent tower cont...Read More

The interior of the Cathedral is magnificent, however many of the Masterpieces of art were stolen in the 18th century by the French Revolutionaries.

The Cathedral is also very famous because of his magnificent collection of stained – glass windows, some of them still date from the 15th and 16th century.

The Cathedral also has a beautiful collection of paintings: amongst them are 4 of Ruben's most important paintings: The Descent of the Cross, The Raising of the Cross, The Assumption and The Resurrection.

The Groenplaats

When it isn’t raining you’ll find a lot of cozy terraces at this square, below this square is a big underground parking lot. Many years ago, the Groenplaats was the burial-ground of the Our Lady Cathedral, but Napoleon changed it and re-named it to Place Napoleon. Later on its name changed to Groenplaats.

There is also a music bandstand on this square, so when you ‘re lucky you can listen to the bands that perform here from time to time. In the back you see the famous Hilton Hotel. In the middle of the Groenplaats you see the statue of the master of painters : Pieter Paul Rubens. It dates from 1843.

Directions: oude Koornmarkt, at Nr 16 is the entrance of the Vlaaikensgang.

You really should try this small "road." Well, it isn’t really a road- it's more of a gangway. Here you’ll get a good impression of the people of Antwerpen in the 16th century. On Monday evening the real connoisseurs come here to listen to the carillon concerts.
