An August 2000 trip to Portland by Globe

After a few visits, Portland has become one of my favorite vacation spots. The scenery, restaurants, and entertainment make it one of the greatest cities in the U.S.

Overview

While Portland offers many sights and activities, the surrounding area is attractive as well. Within a two hour drive, you can see the ocean, the Columbia River Gorge, Mt. Hood, or Mt. St. Helens. Nature lovers will feel like they have found paradise. Waterfalls, caves, lakes, and rivers add to the gorgeous landscape.

Quick Tips:

Weather in and around Portland can be unpredictable. Even in the summer, be prepared for rain and cool temperatures. Always pack an umbrella and a sweatshirt!

Best Way To Get Around:

Public transportation and walking are the best ways to get around downtown. The bus system and light rail system are affordable and efficient.

Restaurant | "Ringside"

Ringside is the perfect choice for many occasions. This upscale steakhouse has a broad menu and attractive decor. The atmosphere is classy but comfortable, and is appropriate for anything from a romantic date to a family dinner. The prices are fairly high, but nothing seems overpriced. I will definitely return to Ringside on future visits to the city.

Cannon BeachBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

Cannon Beach is one of the more popular beaches on the northern Oregon coast. Like most Atlantic beaches, Cannon Beach offers beautiful sand and shells. However, Cannon Beach also has amazing cliffs and rocks that add to the scenery. Haystack Rock is the object of many paintings and photographs. During low tide, you may walk out to the base of the rock. However, take care to return to shore as soon as the tide starts to come in. Otherwise you could quickly find yourself stranded out on the rock.

Aside from the actual beach, you can see a variety of shops, galleries, and restaurants. If you are looking for a secluded beach, Cannon Beach may not be the best choice, as it is always packed with tourists. However, Cannon Beach would be ideal for a family vacation because there are activities for everyone.

TwistBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

Twist is a great stop for window shoppers or people who are looking to decorate their home with fun, usuable artwork. Prices range from very reasonable to very expensive for some of the larger pieces like dining tables. The use of bright colors and different mediums make Twist well worth a visit.

Powell's BooksBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "POWELL'S CITY OF BOOKS"

Powell's is so big that they offer maps of the store layout. They have a huge selection of new and used books and magazines, plus a coffee shop where you are welcome to sit and read the merchandise. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. Prices for the used books are very affordable. I have a hard time walking out the door without buying an armload of books. Powell's also buys used books, so you could come prepared and wind up with a little extra spending money for your trip. To check out their selection before making a trip, you could look at their website, where they offer online purchasing and delivery. Despite this option, a trip to the store should not be skipped.
